Why do you want to study this course or subject?

The field behind our estate floods in the same corner every winter, and the council keeps clearing the drain rather than asking why the water arrives so fast. That corner is the reason I started reading about soil structure. In Geography I learned how compaction reduces infiltration, and in Biology I began to see soil as a living system rather than a growing medium, full of fungi, invertebrates and bacteria that are doing most of the work. Once I understood that, ordinary things became interesting: why the allotment beds we never walk on drain better, why the bare slope by the car park always loses material after heavy rain, why farmers in the valley are being asked to change how they manage grassland near the river. I want to study soil and water management because it sits exactly where my three A-level subjects meet and because the questions are practical. Food production, flood risk and water quality all depend on decisions made field by field, and those decisions need people who can measure what is actually happening in a soil profile and explain it to the person farming it. I am drawn to the applied side of the degree: soil survey and classification, hydrology, irrigation and drainage design, nutrient management and catchment-scale planning. I would like eventually to work as an adviser with farmers and land managers, and I know that means being confident with both laboratory analysis and a spade in a wet field in February.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

My A-levels give me a useful spread for this course. Geography has been the most direct preparation: I have studied the water cycle, drainage basin processes, erosion and river management, and I completed an independent investigation comparing infiltration rates on a well-used footpath, the grass either side and an uncompacted corner of a nearby field. I used a simple ring infiltrometer method, took soil samples to estimate moisture content by oven drying at college, and found the pattern I expected, though my results were noisier than I had hoped because I could not control antecedent rainfall. Writing up that limitation honestly taught me more about experimental design than the fieldwork itself. Biology has covered nutrient cycling, decomposition and transport in plants, which helps me understand why nitrogen and phosphorus behave so differently once they reach a watercourse. Chemistry is the subject I have had to work hardest at, and it has become the most valuable: titrations, ion behaviour in solution and the concept of pH have given me the vocabulary for cation exchange and soil acidity, which I have started reading about independently. Outside lessons I read the farming press and follow debates about slurry storage rules in Wales. I am also working through material on soil texture by hand-feel, practising on samples from the allotment until my estimates match what the wetting and rolling test suggests.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

Three afternoons a week I collect my youngest brother from school and look after him until my mother finishes her shift, which includes cooking, homework and getting him to swimming on time. It is unremarkable, but it has made me organised and realistic about planning: I revise in fixed blocks in the evenings because there is no other option. Fortnightly I volunteer with a community allotment group, mostly on the shared plots and compost bays. Turning compost heaps and seeing the difference between a well-aerated bay and a compacted, sour one has been a practical education, and I have helped older members with digging they find difficult, which means I have spent time listening to people who have watched the same soil for thirty years. I have also joined litter picks with a local river group and helped record simple temperature and clarity observations at set points along the river, learning how much care consistent sampling requires. My Saturday job in a garden centre involves advising customers on composts, drainage and lime, so I have had to explain soil ideas clearly to people who are not interested in the science, only in whether their lawn will stop puddling. I play in a five-a-side team and have covered as an informal referee for the younger group. Together these commitments have taught me to turn up reliably in poor weather, work with people much older than me, and keep good records.
