Why do you want to study this course or subject?
I first heard the phrase "radiotherapy planning" while fitting spectacles for a customer who came in every few weeks during her treatment. She talked about lying still under a machine, about the small tattoo marks on her chest, and about the staff who greeted her by name each morning. I had assumed cancer treatment was mainly drugs and surgery; I had no real idea that a separate profession existed to deliver precisely targeted radiation, day after day, to the same few millimetres of tissue. That conversation sent me reading, and what I found kept my attention far longer than a passing curiosity would explain. I was drawn to the combination of physics and human contact: the fact that a therapeutic radiographer works with CT images, dose distributions and immobilisation equipment, and then greets a frightened person and helps them onto the couch. In my current job I enjoy the technical side of dispensing lenses, measuring, calculating, checking my figures, but I also enjoy the fifteen minutes spent explaining to someone why their new prescription feels strange. Radiation therapy seems to ask for both, and to ask for them at the same time. I am also interested in the long relationship a course of fractionated treatment creates. Twenty or thirty attendances means a patient becomes familiar, and small changes in their weight, skin condition or mood become visible to the team treating them. I want work where accuracy genuinely matters and where noticing someone is part of the job rather than an extra. I am applying now, at thirty-four, because I have thought about it for three years, tested my interest against study and volunteering, and found it holding firm.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
I left school with GCSEs including grade B in Mathematics and Double Science, then went straight into work, so returning to formal study has meant starting again carefully. I am currently completing an Access to Higher Education Diploma in Science at my local college, studying two evenings a week and one full day. The physics units have been the most useful preparation: we covered waves, radioactive decay and half-life, and I finally understood ionising radiation as something measurable rather than mysterious. Working through inverse square law problems was the point at which the geometry of treatment began to make sense to me. Biology has been equally relevant, particularly cell division and DNA damage, which explains why fractionation exists at all and why healthy tissue is given time to recover between treatments. In chemistry I had to rebuild my confidence with logarithms and unit conversions, which took a term of steady practice rather than any sudden improvement. My assessed work has included a report on medical imaging modalities, for which I compared how CT, MRI and ultrasound produce images and what each contributes before treatment planning. Writing it taught me to use journal articles and to be honest about what I did not yet understand. Alongside the course I have read parts of introductory radiography textbooks borrowed through the college library, and I follow the Society of Radiographers' public-facing material on the profession. Studying while working has forced me to be organised: I plan my week on a paper calendar, keep a folder of worked physics problems to revisit, and have learned to ask tutors questions early rather than hoping confusion will resolve itself.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
For nine years I have worked in optical retail, the last four as a dispensing assistant. I take facial measurements, adjust frames, order lenses and check the finished work against the prescription before handing it over. Mistakes are expensive and obvious, so I have developed the habit of double-checking figures and recording exactly what I have done. I deal with people who are anxious, in a hurry, or unhappy with something that is not my fault, and I have learned to stay steady and explain clearly without rushing. I have also trained two new starters, which mostly meant demonstrating slowly and letting them practise while I watched. For the past two years I have volunteered one evening a week at a hospice, taking the drinks trolley round and sitting with patients and families. It is unglamorous work, but it has taught me a great deal about being comfortable in rooms where people are seriously ill, about listening without filling silences, and about knowing when a family needs privacy. I do not confuse that with clinical experience, but it has shown me I can be present in difficult situations and go home able to sleep. I arranged an informal conversation with a therapeutic radiographer through a college contact, who described the daily routine of verification imaging and the physical work of positioning patients; that honesty about the demands was useful. Outside work I help manage a shared allotment plot, which involves rotas, negotiating with neighbours over shed space and a lot of digging. I also swim early most mornings, which is how I keep my energy up for a course, a job and a household.
