Personal statement example
My interest in population studies grew out of a question I could not answer with the tools I had as an undergraduate. For my dissertation I looked at internal migration and ageing in three English coastal towns, using Census tables and ONS mid-year estimates alongside interviews from a published qualitative archive. I could describe the outcome clearly enough: an older age structure produced by out-migration of people in their twenties as much as by in-migration of retirees. What I could not do was model it. I had no real grasp of how to build a population projection, how to handle the assumptions behind migration components, or how to judge whether a difference in fertility between two areas reflected composition or behaviour. That gap is what I want a taught postgraduate year to close.
My degree gave me a solid grounding in social stratification, research methods and social policy, and I chose quantitative options wherever they were available. I took a module in survey analysis where we worked with Understanding Society, and I learned to be careful with weights and with the temptation to read too much into small subsamples. I also read outside the curriculum: Massimo Livi Bacci's A Concise History of World Population helped me see demographic transition as a set of contested historical accounts rather than a single curve, and Hans Rosling's Factfulness was useful for thinking about how population figures are communicated, even where I found its optimism about data quality a little smooth. More recently I have been reading about cohort versus period measures of fertility, which has changed how I interpret headlines about birth rates falling.
For two weeks last spring I shadowed a public health intelligence team at a local authority. My role was firmly that of an observer and occasional helper: I checked ward-level figures against source spreadsheets, sat in on meetings about a joint strategic needs assessment, and tidied a set of notes on data sources for the analyst who was leading it. What struck me was how much of the work involved explaining uncertainty to people who wanted a single number, particularly around projected demand for older people's services. One analyst showed me how small changes in migration assumptions shifted a projection enough to alter a commissioning conversation. I left with a much clearer sense that demography is applied work with real consequences, and that technical competence has to sit alongside the ability to say honestly what the data cannot support.
I now work full time as a data administrator for a housing association, maintaining tenancy records and producing monthly reports on voids and waiting lists. It is routine work, but it has taught me a great deal about administrative data in practice: duplicate records, household composition recorded inconsistently, and the way definitions drift between teams. I am the person colleagues ask when a figure looks wrong, and I have written short guidance notes so that reports are produced the same way each month. Alongside this I volunteer fortnightly at a community advice drop-in, mostly helping people complete forms and find the right service, which keeps me close to the household-level realities behind aggregate change.
I would like to develop formal training in demographic methods, including life tables, standardisation, projection techniques and event history analysis, and to become confident in R for this kind of work. In the longer term I hope to work as an analyst in local or national government, or in a research institute concerned with ageing and household change. A dissertation on migration and age structure in smaller towns would let me return to my undergraduate question properly equipped.
