Personal statement example

For the last seven years I have spent much of my working week with a fusion splicer on my knee in a roadside cabinet, joining single-mode fibre and chasing losses that should not be there. That work taught me to respect light as an engineering material, but it also made me aware of where my understanding stops. I can read an OTDR trace and tell a customer which joint is failing; I cannot yet design the modulator, the amplifier or the waveguide that the signal passes through. A master's in photonics is the route from operating the technology to contributing to it, and I am applying now because I have spent the past year making sure I can meet the course on academic terms.

My BSc in Physics gave me a solid grounding in electromagnetism, optics and quantum mechanics, and a final-year project in which I built a simple grating spectrometer on an optical bench, measured the sodium doublet and spent an instructive fortnight discovering how much of the linewidth I was seeing came from my slit width rather than the source. Eight years is a long gap, so I have not relied on that alone. Over the past twelve months I have worked steadily through Hecht's Optics, concentrating on the chapters on coherence, polarisation and Fourier optics, and I have taken an evening mathematics course covering complex analysis, linear algebra and partial differential equations to recover fluency in the tools rather than just the ideas. I have also been teaching myself Python, using numerical work as a way of testing whether I actually understand something: my most useful exercise so far has been a beam propagation script that models a Gaussian beam through a lens and then through a graded-index fibre section, which forced me to be honest about paraxial approximations and about what the mode field diameter in my datasheets really describes.

My employment has shaped what interests me academically. Dispersion and nonlinear effects are not abstractions when a long span underperforms and you are working out whether the problem is a bad connector, chromatic dispersion or an amplifier being pushed too hard. I became the person colleagues asked about launch power and attenuation budgets, partly because I enjoyed explaining them, and for the last two years I have trained new starters in splicing technique and test procedure. Teaching sharpened my own physics: it is difficult to explain why a dirty ferrule causes back-reflection without being clear about refractive index mismatch. I have also run a Saturday science club at my local library, where a session on making a pinhole camera from a cereal box is often more demanding to prepare than it sounds.

I am particularly keen to work on integrated photonics and on fibre-based sensing, where my field knowledge of installation constraints and environmental effects on cable might actually be an advantage in laboratory work. I am realistic about the adjustment involved in returning to full-time study, and I have planned for it: I have saved to reduce my hours, I am used to structuring my own time across a week of dispersed jobs, and I am comfortable being the least experienced person in a room while I learn.

What I want from the degree is the theoretical depth and laboratory practice to design and characterise photonic components, and then to work in device development in the UK optical communications or sensing industry. I bring a working familiarity with real optical systems, a habit of methodical fault-finding, and the motivation of someone who has chosen this subject after doing the job that depends on it.
