Why do you want to study this course or subject?

In Physics we were taught to write conclusions saying whether our results 'supported the hypothesis'. Measuring the resistance of a wire, my graph was slightly curved, and I spent longer arguing with my lab partner about whether the curve was heating, human error or the theory being wrong than I did on the calculation. That argument is what I want to study. Physics tells me what the current theory says; it does not tell me how much a messy graph should count against a theory, or why we trust some measurements enough to explain away others.

Reading Karl Popper's account of falsification gave me a first answer, and then a problem. The idea that scientific claims must rule something out matched the way my teachers talk about predictions. But it did not match how experiments actually go in a school laboratory, where a failed result is almost always blamed on the apparatus. Thomas Kuhn's description of normal science, where puzzles are solved within an accepted framework rather than tested to destruction, felt closer to what I had seen, though I am not persuaded that theory change is as abrupt as he suggests. In History I have been studying how historians weigh conflicting sources, and I keep noticing the same questions about evidence and interpretation appearing in different clothes.

I want a degree that takes those questions seriously with proper rigour: logic, argument, and the history of how ideas about method were formed. Philosophy of science suits me because it needs both the technical patience I enjoy in Mathematics and the willingness to keep asking why, which my Physics teacher tolerates more generously than she probably should.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

Physics, Mathematics and History have each given me something different for this course. Physics has supplied the material: wave-particle duality, models of the atom, and the constant reminder that the equations we use are approximations chosen for convenience. Mathematics has trained me in following proof carefully, and my work on logarithms, series and calculus has made me comfortable with formal reasoning, which I understand underpins the logic modules in a philosophy degree. History has taught me to handle disagreement without pretending it can be settled by a single fact; writing essays on the causes of the First World War showed me how much depends on which explanation you think a good explanation should look like.

My Extended Project asked whether psychology is a science. I chose it because a friend studying Psychology described experiments that sounded rigorous, while my Physics class treated the subject as soft. I read about replication problems in psychology, looked at how operational definitions are used for concepts like memory or stress, and tried to apply Popper's criterion before deciding it was too blunt. I ended up arguing that the boundary question is less useful than asking which specific methods in a discipline are reliable and why. Researching it taught me to summarise a position fairly before objecting to it, and to notice when I was treating a slogan as an argument.

Alongside this I have worked through introductory logic exercises on validity, truth tables and common fallacies, mostly from library books and free lecture recordings, and I have started Hume's writing on causation, which is slower going but has changed how I read the word 'because' in my Physics notes.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

On Saturdays I work at a garden centre, moving stock, watering, and serving on the till. It is ordinary work, but it has been useful practice in explaining things clearly to people who have not asked for a lecture: customers want to know whether a plant will survive in a shaded border, and my answer has to be honest about uncertainty without being useless. Gardeners also reason interestingly. Regulars tell me remedies they swear by, and I have become careful about the difference between something working and something seeming to work, which is the same distinction I was writing about in my project.

I help organise our college debating society, booking rooms, finding motions and persuading reluctant first years to speak. Preparing to argue positions I disagree with, including one debate on whether scientific advice should determine public policy, has made me better at finding the strongest version of an opponent's case. Chairing sessions has also taught me to keep a discussion on the actual disagreement rather than letting it drift into definitions nobody has agreed.

At home I share responsibility for my younger brother's school run on the days my mother works late, which has made me organised about deadlines because I cannot rely on late evenings. For myself, I play in a local badminton club and have been slowly learning chess openings, mostly because I like the feeling of understanding why a move is good rather than copying it.

What I bring to a philosophy degree is stubborn curiosity, steady work habits, and a genuine enjoyment of being argued out of a view I held. I am looking forward to seminars where that happens weekly.
