Personal statement example

My interest in the subsurface began with something very ordinary: a road cutting on the way to college, where a thin bed of shale sat between two sandstones. I spent a term photographing it in different weather and eventually worked out why the sandstone held up and the shale did not. That habit of looking closely at cheap, available material has shaped how I have studied geology ever since, and it is why I now want to train specifically in petroleum geoscience.

I graduated this summer with a 2:1 in Geology. The strongest parts of my degree were sedimentology, structural geology and the geophysics modules, where I first worked with reflection seismic data and understood how much interpretation depends on careful attention to what the data cannot tell you. My dissertation grew out of that. Using publicly released well logs and a legacy seismic line from a North Sea block, I correlated four wells across a Palaeocene sandstone interval and compared gamma ray and porosity responses to see how reservoir quality changed laterally. My conclusions were modest, since I was working with old, patchy data and no core, but the process taught me a great deal: how to build a consistent log correlation, how to pick a horizon and doubt my own pick, and how to write down uncertainty honestly rather than tidying it away. I also learned basic Petrel workflows in the department's computer room, mostly outside timetabled hours, and did the tie between depth and time badly enough the first time that I now check it carefully.

My field experience is more limited than some applicants', because I lived at home and took paid work in the holidays rather than travelling. I made up what I could locally. With a university geology society I mapped a disused sandstone quarry over several weekends, logging about fifteen metres of section with a tape, a notebook and a hand lens, and identifying cross-bedding sets that let us argue for a fluvial channel origin. It was small-scale and low-cost, but it was the first time I had to decide for myself where one facies ended and another began, which is the same judgement that underlies reservoir architecture on a much larger scale.

Alongside study I work part-time as an assistant to a technician in a further education science department, preparing practicals, maintaining equipment and keeping records of chemical stock. It is unglamorous, but it has made me methodical about documentation and calibration, and comfortable explaining things clearly to people who are not specialists. I also lead occasional short walks for a local geology group, which has sharpened how I describe evidence and admit what is disputed.

What draws me to a taught MSc is the chance to work properly with integrated datasets and industry-standard software, and to be examined on quantitative skills I have only begun: petrophysical interpretation, basin modelling, seismic attribute analysis and the economics and risking that sit around a prospect. I have been reading around this, including Bjørlykke's work on sediment diagenesis, which reframed reservoir quality for me as a burial history problem rather than a depositional one alone. I am also increasingly interested in how the same characterisation skills apply to carbon dioxide storage and geothermal projects, where seal integrity and reservoir heterogeneity matter just as much.

I am realistic about the energy sector's uncertainty, and I want training that travels: the ability to build a defensible subsurface model from imperfect data. I would bring to the course persistence, careful record-keeping and a willingness to do the unfashionable groundwork before drawing conclusions.
