Why do you want to study this course or subject?

What holds my attention about petroleum engineering is that the material you are working with cannot be seen. A reservoir engineer builds a picture of porous rock kilometres down from pressure readings, core samples and seismic surveys, then makes decisions worth millions on the basis of that picture. My AS Geology gave me the first half of that idea: I learned how sandstone porosity depends on grain sorting and cementation, and why a caprock either seals or does not. My Chemistry and Physics work gave me the second half, particularly fluid behaviour and phase changes, which is where the two subjects meet in a course like this. Reading around the subject pushed me further. I worked through the opening chapters of Tarek Ahmed's Reservoir Engineering Handbook in my college library and, while the later derivations were beyond me, I followed the material balance argument that a reservoir's behaviour can be treated as a tank with changing pressure and fluid volumes. I also followed the debate about whether subsurface engineering skills transfer to carbon dioxide storage and deep geothermal schemes; the questions about injectivity, well integrity and long-term sealing are recognisably the same questions asked in reverse. I want to train in a discipline where fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and rock properties are used together to make cautious decisions about systems nobody can inspect directly, and where the same training is likely to be needed for energy storage as for production.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

I am studying Maths, Chemistry and Physics at A level, having taken Geology to AS. Maths has been the most directly useful: the calculus and differential equations work gave me the language for rates of change, and I now recognise why Darcy's law for flow through a porous medium is written as a gradient rather than a simple ratio. In Chemistry I enjoyed the equilibria and gas law topics most, and my practical assessment on rates of reaction taught me to treat temperature control as part of the measurement rather than a background condition. Physics gave me mechanics, pressure and thermal transfer, and a habit of checking units before trusting an answer. My main project was for a college engineering challenge, where I investigated pressure drop along tubing. I built a rig from clear plastic pipe, a small submersible pump and three manometer tappings, then compared measured head loss with values from a friction factor chart at different flow rates. My measurements ran consistently above prediction, and after checking the pipe bore with a vernier I concluded that the connector fittings were adding losses I had not accounted for. Writing that up honestly, with error bars and a section on what I would change, taught me more than a tidier result would have. Geology fieldwork in Derbyshire also showed me how much interpretation sits behind a neat cross-section on paper.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

For the past year I have worked Saturdays on the trade counter of a builders' merchant. Customers arrive with a half-finished job and an incomplete description, so most of the work is asking questions in the right order: what diameter, what pressure rating, what is it carrying. I have learned the difference between pipe materials and fittings in a practical way, and I have become comfortable saying that I need to check something rather than guessing. Handling deliveries and stock counts also taught me that a system only works if people record things accurately, which I expect applies to well data as much as to pallets of fittings. At college I help run a STEM club for Year 8 pupils from a nearby school, where I plan a short activity each fortnight. My most successful session used balloons and a bicycle pump to show that gases compress and liquids largely do not; explaining it three different ways to three different tables sharpened my own understanding of compressibility. I was asked to represent the club at our college open evening, which I took as a sign that the sessions were landing well. Outside college I play in a local five-a-side league and have taken on organising fixtures and subs for my team, which is less glamorous than playing but keeps it running. Together these commitments have taught me to manage a week with fixed obligations in it, which I expect university study to require.
