Why do you want to study this course or subject?

The compost bays at our community allotment taught me more biology than I expected. When I started volunteering there two years ago I assumed compost was just tidy waste disposal. Then one of the regular growers showed me how the heap heated up, how the texture changed over months, and how the beds we had mulched held moisture through a dry June while the untreated plot cracked. That gap between two plots on the same site made me want to understand soil as a living system rather than a growing medium, and organic agriculture is the field that takes that question seriously at the scale of a whole farm.

My A-levels have pushed the interest further. In Biology I enjoyed the nutrient cycle and decomposer topics most, particularly how nitrogen fixation by rhizobia in legume root nodules feeds a rotation rather than a single crop. Geography gave me the wider frame: soil erosion, water quality and the pressures on farm incomes. I am aware that organic systems involve genuine trade-offs, especially lower yields per hectare for some crops and the labour and knowledge needed to manage weeds and disease without synthetic inputs. Reading Dieter Helm's Green and Prosperous Land made me think harder about how public money for environmental outcomes might change what a viable farm business looks like.

I want a degree that combines soil science, crop and livestock management, and the economics of certification and marketing, because decisions on an organic holding are rarely purely agronomic. A four-year course with a placement appeals to me particularly, since I learn well by doing and then reading to make sense of what I have seen. In the longer term I would like to work in advisory or technical support for growers converting to organic systems, ideally in the north of England where I know the landscape and the farming pressures reasonably well.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

I am studying Biology, Chemistry and Geography at A-level, which together cover most of the scientific groundwork for this course. Biology has been the most directly useful: photosynthesis, plant transport, ecosystems and the practical work on soil respiration and food tests. Chemistry gave me the confidence to read about soil pH, cation exchange and fertiliser chemistry without being intimidated by the vocabulary, and titrations and moles have made me more careful about measurement generally. Geography has developed my essay writing and my ability to weigh evidence, especially in the unit on water and carbon cycles, where I wrote about land management in an upland catchment.

For my Extended Project Qualification I investigated whether green manures are a practical option for small-scale growers, comparing phacelia and field beans using published trial summaries alongside interviews with three allotment holders about cost, timing and how they fitted a cover crop into a short growing season. The research taught me to be sceptical of results taken out of context: trial conditions on a research farm are not the same as a clay plot with one afternoon a week available for it. My supervisor's comments on referencing were blunt and useful, and I now keep a proper reading log.

Outside the syllabus I read the farming pages of the news and listen to agricultural podcasts while I am on the bus. I follow discussions about rotational grazing and about whether livestock belong in low-input systems, and I have started keeping notes on the arguments on both sides so I am not simply agreeing with whoever I read last. I also took an online introduction to soil health over the summer, which covered aggregate stability and the effects of compaction, and I have been testing what I learned against the state of the allotment paths.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

Two evenings a week and most Saturday mornings I look after my younger brother while my mother is at work. He is nine and has a lot of energy, so the routine involves homework, dinner and getting him to football on time. It is ordinary, but it has made me organised and realistic about planning: I revise in fixed blocks and I no longer assume I will feel like working later. Explaining his science homework has also been unexpectedly good practice at putting an idea in plain language, which I needed when I presented my project findings to my class.

At the community allotment I have a share of a bed and help with general site work: turning compost, edging paths, sowing and watering during dry spells, and the autumn clear-up. I have kept a notebook of sowing dates and what did well, and I can now recognise the common weeds and tell blackfly damage from something more worrying. Last year I helped run two open afternoons for families from the library, setting up a bean-planting table for younger children. Answering their parents' questions about slugs and whether you really can grow anything worth eating in a shady yard made me appreciate how much of this subject is about communication.

My Saturday job at a garden centre involves tills, restocking and pointing customers towards the right compost or seed. Peak weekends in spring are relentless, and I have learned to stay patient and accurate when there is a queue. Talking to customers has given me a rough sense of what people will pay for and what they abandon, which connects to what I have read about the price premium organic produce depends on.

I swim most weeks and play in a five-a-side team, which keeps me sane during exam terms. All of this has built habits I expect to need at university: turning up, keeping records and asking questions when I do not understand something.
