Why do you want to study this course or subject?
My Biology teacher set us a task that seemed simple: work out whether a product marketed as a health food actually deserved the label. I chose a fruit and nut cereal bar from the shelf at work, and spent an evening comparing its back-of-pack nutrition information with the reference intakes and with a plain oat version costing half as much. The sugar content was almost identical. What interested me was not that I had caught a company out, but that I had no way of judging what the numbers meant for a real person without knowing their age, activity, appetite and budget. Nutrition sits exactly at that join between biochemistry and everyday life, and that is why I want to study it properly rather than picking up fragments from labels and headlines.
Since then I have tried to understand how dietary advice is actually built. Reading about the Eatwell Guide led me to look at how national recommendations are drawn from population data, and how much they have to simplify. In Chemistry I enjoy the topics that explain food behaviour, such as why unsaturated fats stay liquid and how proteins denature, and Psychology has shown me how poorly intention predicts behaviour, which seems central to any advice a nutritionist gives. I am drawn to a degree that includes human physiology and metabolism alongside public health nutrition and food science, because I want to be able to explain a recommendation at the level of the cell and the level of the weekly shop. In the longer term I would like to register as a nutritionist and work in community or public health settings, where the practical constraints people face matter as much as the evidence itself.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
My A levels have given me the science foundation the course needs. Biology has been the most directly useful: the digestion and absorption topics gave me the vocabulary for how macronutrients are broken down, and studying enzymes helped me understand why nutrient bioavailability varies rather than being a fixed property of a food. My coursework investigation on vitamin C content in fresh, frozen and long-stored produce taught me to be careful with variables, because my first set of titration results was unusable once I realised I had not standardised how finely I chopped the samples. Repeating it more carefully produced a clearer pattern and a much better understanding of why food storage matters nutritionally.
Chemistry has trained the quantitative side of my thinking. Working with moles, concentrations and calorimetry means I am comfortable with the arithmetic behind energy values and portion calculations, and organic chemistry has made lipid and carbohydrate structures feel familiar rather than intimidating. Psychology has been a useful contrast: studying research methods, sampling and the limitations of self-report has made me cautious about dietary recall data, which people are known to record imperfectly. I also completed the Extended Project Qualification, comparing the nutrient content and cost of supermarket meal deals with packed lunches assembled from basic ingredients. I built a small spreadsheet using published food composition figures, learned to reference properly, and had to accept that my sample of products was too narrow to generalise from. Writing that limitation honestly was more valuable than the result. My college also ran a short study skills programme on academic reading, which has made working through longer journal articles less daunting.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
I work most weekends on the bakery counter of a large supermarket, which has taught me more about food and people than I expected. I answer allergen questions several times a shift, so I have learned to check documented information rather than guess, and to be clear when I do not know. I see which products sell when money is tight at the end of the month, and I have had customers ask me, quite reasonably, why the wholemeal loaf costs more than the white one. Handling those conversations politely while a queue builds has improved my communication and my ability to stay accurate under pressure.
At home I cook two or three evening meals a week for a household of five, including my younger brother who is a fussy eater and my grandmother, who eats small portions and needs food that is easy to chew. Planning meals that suit all of them within a budget has made the idea of dietary compromise concrete rather than theoretical. I have also started keeping notes on the recipes I adapt, mainly to make cheaper pulses and vegetables more appealing to my brother, who now eats lentils if they are in a familiar sauce.
Once a month I volunteer at a community food pantry, unpacking deliveries, checking dates and helping people choose from what is available. It has shown me that advice which ignores availability is useless: there is little point recommending fresh fish if the freezer has tinned mackerel. I am also part of the college netball team, where being reliable at training and supporting newer players matters as much as skill. Together these commitments have built the organisation, patience and respect for other people's circumstances that I think nutrition practice depends on.
