Why do you want to study this course or subject?
For four years my job involved keeping grass short, hedges tidy and borders bare. On one estate I looked after, a strip behind the bin stores had been missed for a season, and by July it was full of knapweed, vetch and more insects than anywhere else on site. I asked whether we could leave it, and the housing officer agreed to a trial. Watching that decision play out, and arguing for it in tenants' meetings, changed what I thought maintenance was for. It also showed me how much of conservation is negotiation: budgets, expectations about neatness, and who gets consulted.
Since then I have wanted to understand the ecology behind decisions I was making by instinct. Volunteering on scrub clearance at a limestone grassland site, I learned that the site manager was working to a rotation based on which species needed short turf and which needed structure, and that the reasoning involved soil, grazing history and the shape of the surrounding landscape. I could follow the practical instructions but not the judgement, and I found that frustrating rather than comfortable.
Studying nature conservation appeals to me because it sits between field skills and evidence. I want to be able to read a management plan critically, design and interpret monitoring, and understand why some restoration schemes achieve their aims and others produce a thinner version of what was intended. Returning to study at 31 is a deliberate choice: I have seen enough of land management to know which questions I want answered, and I would rather spend three years learning to answer them properly than keep guessing.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
My Access to Higher Education Diploma in Science has been the right route back into study. The biology units covered cell structure, genetics, ecology and human physiology, and I took chemistry and geography units alongside. Ecology was the most immediately useful: quadrat and transect methods, trophic relationships, succession and nutrient cycling gave me vocabulary for things I had only observed. The chemistry helped more than I expected, since soil pH, nitrogen availability and the effect of nutrient enrichment on grassland diversity all made better sense once I understood ion exchange and solubility.
For my extended project I compared plant species richness across three sections of a disused railway line near home, one regularly cut by the council, one cleared occasionally by volunteers and one left to scrub. I recorded twenty quadrats in each section, identified species with a field key, and calculated Simpson's index. The scrub section was lowest in herb diversity, which I had half expected, but the tutor's feedback pushed me to acknowledge what my method could not show: the structural value of scrub for nesting birds, and the fact that I sampled once, in August. Learning to state limitations honestly rather than defending my conclusion was the most useful thing I took from the year.
At A-level I studied geography, English and business studies, and my geography background in hydrology and land use still informs how I think about catchments and flooding. Returning to formal study meant relearning how to revise, take notes from journal articles and manage deadlines around shift work, which I now do with far more discipline than I had at eighteen.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
Nine years of work have given me habits that transfer directly. As a garden centre supervisor I trained seasonal staff, handled plant health and answered hundreds of customer questions about what would grow in dry shade or clay. That is where I first noticed how much horticultural advice conflicts with wildlife value, and I began recommending native hedging and single-flowered varieties where I could. Later, on a grounds team, I worked outdoors in all weathers, operated machinery, followed risk assessments and dealt with tenants who were unhappy about changes to mowing. Explaining an unpopular decision calmly, without pretending the objection is stupid, seems to me a core conservation skill.
I volunteer one Sunday a month with my county wildlife trust. Most of it is practical: scrub cutting, raking off, hedge-laying, dragging brash to burn sites. Last summer I was trained to walk a butterfly transect and now share a route with another volunteer, recording weekly in the flight season and submitting the counts. I am still slow with the skippers and I check photographs against a guide afterwards, but I can identify the common species confidently and I understand why consistent recording conditions matter more than a high total.
My allotment is where I test things on a small scale. I have kept a comfrey bed and a compost rotation going for three years, and left a third of the plot as rough grass and a pond, which produced newts in the second spring. I also read fairly steadily; Isabella Tree's Wilding made me think harder about grazing and disturbance, though it left me wanting the monitoring data behind the claims, which is part of why I want a degree rather than more reading.
I am used to early starts, physical work and being the person who stays to finish a job properly.
