Why do you want to study this course or subject?
The thing that hooked me was not a concert but a cassette. My uncle plays bass in a covers band and had about forty tapes of rehearsals from the nineties, some of them barely audible. He asked whether I could "put them on the computer", and what I assumed would be an afternoon's job turned into two years of learning why a recording sounds the way it does. I learned to set levels properly at the capture stage rather than fixing things later, why high-pass filtering removed rumble without touching the bass guitar, and that noise reduction pushed too far makes voices sound like they are speaking underwater. Working out why something sounded wrong taught me far more than any successful mix.
That led me into reading, and eventually into the physics behind what I was hearing. I worked through much of Howard and Angus's Acoustics and Psychoacoustics, which reframed a lot of my guesswork: masking explained why my mixes turned muddy whenever I layered two instruments in the same register, and the material on critical bands gave me a language for decisions I had been making by ear alone. I am now interested in the gap between what a signal measures and what a listener perceives, which is where music technology sits. I want to study this formally because my knowledge is patchy in a way that only a structured course will fix. I can operate a compressor, but I could not derive the maths of its gain reduction, and I want the theory alongside the studio practice, along with proper acoustic spaces, tuition in synthesis and programming, and other people whose work I can learn from.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
My A levels in Music, Physics and Maths connect directly to this field. Physics has been the most useful: work on waves, superposition, resonance and standing waves explained things I had already met practically, such as why my bedroom has a boomy corner and why moving a microphone a few centimetres changes the recorded tone. An investigation on resonance in air columns made me much more careful about measurement and about reporting uncertainty honestly rather than presenting a tidy result.
Maths gives me the tools I will need for signal processing. I am comfortable with trigonometric functions, logarithms and exponentials, all of which turn up constantly once you start reading about decibels and filters, and I have begun reading around the Fourier series to understand why any periodic waveform can be broken into sine components. I can follow the idea, though I know I need proper teaching to use it.
A level Music keeps my listening and analysis sharp. Harmony and counterpoint exercises have improved my ear, and analysing set works has taught me to describe texture and timbre precisely, which matters when you are trying to explain to a singer what you have changed. For my composition coursework I wrote a piece for clarinet and processed electronics, notating the acoustic part conventionally while documenting the effects chain separately, and presenting both to my teacher forced me to justify every processing decision musically rather than technically. I also taught myself enough Python in my own time to write a short script that generates a sine tone at a chosen frequency and writes it to a WAV file, which made sample rates and bit depth feel concrete rather than abstract.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
For the past two years I have run sound for my college's drama productions, which has been the most instructive thing I do. I rig and cable the system, set up radio mics on performers, and mix the show live from a small digital desk. Feedback during a technical rehearsal taught me to identify the offending frequency and notch it out rather than simply pulling everything down, and a failed battery mid-performance taught me to keep spares taped to the desk and to write a proper cue sheet. I train two younger students each year, partly because explaining gain structure to somebody else exposes the bits I only half understand.
At home I record friends' bands in my bedroom with a two-input interface and three microphones. The limitations are useful: with so few channels I have to commit to microphone placement instead of fixing things in the mix, and I have learned to record drums with two microphones by paying attention to the distances between them. I keep notes on every session so I can compare what worked.
I work Saturdays and Sundays in a supermarket bakery, starting at six. It has made me reliable about early starts and calm when several things need doing at once, and serving customers has improved how I talk to nervous performers before a session. I also play clarinet in a community wind band, where playing an inner part has made me much more aware of balance and blend, something I now listen for when mixing. Reading Gibson's The Art of Mixing changed how I think about stereo placement and depth, and I have been experimenting with its ideas about visualising a mix in three dimensions. I am ready to take all of this further with proper equipment, teaching and time.
