Why do you want to study this course or subject?

My interest in ultrasound started with the physics rather than the medicine. In Year 12 we covered waves, and I became curious about how a pulse of sound could be turned into a picture of something as soft and shifting as a liver or a knee joint. I read around the topic and found that almost everything interesting about the image comes from the boundaries between tissues, and that the operator's choices about frequency, depth and gain change what can be seen. That combination appealed to me: a machine that will not simply hand you an answer, and a person who has to know both the anatomy and the equipment well enough to produce something another clinician can rely on.

What holds my attention now is the responsibility attached to the images. A sonographer is often looking, measuring and forming an impression while a patient is lying beside them, awake, watching the screen and asking questions. I have read about how sonographers describe the balance between scanning carefully and managing a conversation, including the difficulty of not giving premature reassurance. I do not underestimate how demanding that is, and it is part of why the role interests me more than a purely technical one.

I would like a course that takes anatomy, physics, instrumentation and patient care seriously together, with placements from early on, because I know that image interpretation is learned by scanning many people rather than by reading. I am aware of the physical side too: awkward positions, repetitive movement, long lists. Speaking to a family friend who works in radiology reception gave me a realistic sense of how busy departments are. I want to work in one, and I would rather begin training for it now than approach it later through another degree.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

My A levels feed directly into this application. Physics has given me the wave behaviour that underpins imaging, and I now understand reflection, attenuation and the trade-off between penetration and resolution well enough to explain why a deeper structure is harder to see clearly. Biology has covered organ systems, tissue types and the cardiovascular system, which is where my anatomy revision has been most useful; I have built my own labelled diagrams of the abdominal organs and their blood supply because I find drawing them fixes the relationships better than reading does. Psychology has been less obviously related but more useful than I expected, particularly work on memory, stress and how people take in information when anxious.

For my extended project I investigated how ultrasound images are produced and why artefacts appear. I explained pulse-echo timing, the piezoelectric effect and the way shadowing occurs behind strongly reflecting structures such as gallstones, then presented it to my class with a set of annotated example images from an open teaching resource. Narrowing the topic was the hardest part; my first plan tried to cover every imaging modality and was far too broad. Cutting it down taught me to be disciplined about what a piece of work is actually claiming.

I also completed a college study skills module on referencing and evaluating sources, which changed how I read. I now check whether something is a textbook, a professional body document or an unreviewed website before I rely on it. GCSE Maths at grade 7 gave me a solid base for the calculations in Physics, and I have been revising units, logarithmic scales and percentage error because I expect to need them when handling measurements.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

On Saturdays I work behind the photo and print counter of a high street shop. Most of the job is explaining technical processes to people who have no reason to know them: why a low-resolution phone image will look poor enlarged, or why a scanned document needs to be a particular file type. I have learned to check what someone actually wants before starting, to say clearly when something is not possible, and to stay calm when a customer is frustrated because an order has gone wrong. I also handle confidential material, including passport photographs and personal documents, so discretion is routine rather than an abstract principle. Last summer I was asked to train two new starters on the machines, which meant breaking a process into steps rather than doing it quickly myself.

Outside work I am a junior coach at my local badminton club, where I run part of the Tuesday session for players aged eight to twelve. I plan short drills, adapt them when a child is struggling, and manage the shuttle and court equipment. I completed a Level 1 coaching qualification and a safeguarding course through the club. The most satisfying thing I have done there was persuading three girls who had stopped attending to come back by pairing them for warm-ups rather than leaving them to find partners; all three still play. Positioning people, demonstrating a movement and correcting it without embarrassing them are skills I expect to use when asking patients to turn, breathe in or hold still.

I am also a peer mentor at college, supporting two Year 12 students with organisation and revision planning, which has made me better at listening before offering suggestions. Alongside this I have kept a reading log on imaging and patient communication and follow professional society updates on ultrasound practice, so I have some sense of current discussion about training and workforce pressures. I am ready for a course that is academically demanding and involves working with patients from the first year.
