Why do you want to study this course or subject?

The rock pools at Rhossili taught me to look properly. I started going with my grandfather's old field guide, then kept going on my own, and eventually began recording what I found in a notebook: which crevices held beadlet anemones, where the limpets thinned out after a stormy winter, how a patch of honeycomb worm reef seemed to shift between visits. That habit of repeated looking is what pulled me towards marine conservation rather than marine biology alone. I am less interested in cataloguing species for their own sake than in the harder question of how they persist alongside fishing fleets, sewage outfalls, moorings and holiday crowds.

Studying Geography alongside Biology has shaped this. In Biology I learned how nutrient enrichment drives algal growth and oxygen depletion; in Geography I learned about coastal management decisions, competing stakeholders and the politics of who bears the cost of protection. Marine conservation sits in the overlap, and I want a degree that treats both sides as serious. Reading Callum Roberts's The Unnatural History of the Sea changed how I understand baselines: the idea that each generation accepts a depleted sea as normal made me realise that historical evidence matters as much as current survey data. I would like to study marine protected areas in detail, particularly why designation on a map does not automatically change what happens in the water.

I also want the practical grounding. I am a competent swimmer and comfortable working in cold water and poor weather, and I know that useful conservation involves long hours of quadrats, data entry and public conversations rather than dramatic rescues. A course combining fieldwork, ecological survey methods and policy would let me build from curiosity towards actual competence.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

My A-levels in Biology, Geography and Chemistry have each contributed something specific. Biology gave me the ecological core: population dynamics, trophic relationships, sampling techniques and the statistics needed to say whether a difference is real. Practical work on abundance and distribution taught me why random sampling and repeat measurements matter, and I have applied those ideas to my own rocky shore recording, using a fixed transect and a homemade quadrat rather than wandering and noting whatever caught my eye.

Chemistry has proved more relevant than I expected. Understanding buffers and equilibria helped me follow explanations of ocean acidification properly, including why carbonate availability, rather than acidity alone, is the problem for shell-forming organisms. Titration and dilution work also gave me confidence with laboratory routine and careful recording.

Geography has supplied the human dimension. My coursework investigation examined public attitudes to plastic waste on a stretch of local coastline, combining a litter survey with questionnaires outside a car park and a small shop. Designing the questions taught me how easily a badly worded prompt produces the answer you hoped for, and analysing the results showed a gap between stated concern and reported behaviour. Presenting the findings to my class pushed me to explain data honestly without overstating what a small sample could show.

Outside the syllabus I follow reports from the Marine Conservation Society and have read Helen Scales's Spirals in Time, which gave me an appreciation of molluscs as both ecological actors and cultural objects. I have taught myself the basics of spreadsheets for my survey data and have begun working through introductory material on R, though I am still slow with it.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

For the past eighteen months I have volunteered with a coastal group that runs monthly beach cleans and litter surveys. My role is straightforward: I help set out the survey line, collect and sort items into the recording categories, and read out counts for the coordinator to log. Sorting by category is fiddlier than it sounds, and I have learned to ask rather than guess when something is ambiguous, because inconsistent recording makes the dataset useless. Seeing the same fragments of fishing rope and wet wipe bindings appear repeatedly taught me more about pollution sources than any diagram.

Last summer I completed four days of supervised work shadowing at a marine centre. I mostly observed, but I was given small tasks: preparing food for the aquarium tanks, cleaning viewing panels, checking and writing down temperature and salinity readings while a technician checked my numbers, and helping the education officer set up a rock pool touch table for visiting families. I was struck by how much of the work was routine husbandry and public explanation. One afternoon I listened to a keeper answering a visitor who insisted seals were responsible for declining fish catches, and I noticed she neither dismissed him nor lectured him, but asked what he had seen locally. That conversation stayed with me as a model for how conservation is actually argued.

I work Saturdays at a garden centre, advising customers on plants and handling tills and deliveries. It has made me patient with people who arrive with vague questions, and I have learned to explain things such as why a pond needs oxygenating plants in plain language. Swimming with my club three evenings a week keeps me fit for cold-water fieldwork and has taught me to keep turning up when progress is slow. I also help my younger brother with his homework most weeks, which is its own lesson in explaining clearly.

Together these commitments have given me realistic expectations: careful data, repeated effort and honest conversation matter more than enthusiasm alone, and I am ready to build on them in a degree.
