Why do you want to study this course or subject?
The first thing that made me want to study marine biology was not a documentary but a very ordinary low tide at New Brighton, where I spent an afternoon lifting boulders and finding that almost every one had a different community underneath. I began to notice patterns: barnacles crowded together high up the shore, bladder wrack lower down, shore crabs hiding in the damp cracks. I wanted to know why those bands existed, and reading about the roles of desiccation tolerance and competition in shaping zonation gave me a proper framework for something I had been looking at for years without understanding. Marine biology appeals to me because it sits between organisms and their physical environment. In my geography A level I have studied coastal processes, sediment transport and how estuaries function, and it has been satisfying to see the same ideas reappear in biology when I read about turbidity, nutrient supply and larval dispersal. The Mersey estuary is on my doorstep, and learning that it went from being heavily polluted to supporting seals and returning fish populations made me curious about how recovery is actually measured rather than simply announced. I would like to understand the monitoring behind such claims: what is sampled, how often, and how scientists distinguish real change from natural variation. I am drawn to the practical side of a degree in this subject: boat and field work, identification skills, statistics and laboratory techniques. I know that a lot of marine science is repetitive counting, cold hands and careful record keeping, and that suits the way I like to work. Longer term I am interested in fisheries or coastal conservation work, where biological evidence has to be explained to people whose livelihoods depend on it. Studying this at degree level would let me build the technical foundations I currently lack, particularly in physiology, ecology and data analysis, and test my ideas against far better information than I can reach on my own.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
I am studying Biology, Chemistry and Geography at A level, and the combination has been useful in ways I did not anticipate. Biology has given me the core material I will build on, especially ecology, gas exchange and osmoregulation; I found the comparison of gill and lung structure genuinely interesting, particularly how countercurrent flow in fish gills makes oxygen extraction from water efficient. Chemistry has been harder and more rewarding. Working through solubility, pH and equilibrium has changed how I read about ocean acidification, because I can now follow the carbonate chemistry rather than accepting a summary of it. Titrations and dilution calculations have also made me more careful with practical accuracy. Geography contributes fieldwork method: my class practised systematic and random sampling, learned to justify transect placement and discussed sources of error honestly rather than as an afterthought. That training shaped my biology coursework, an investigation into the abundance of bladder wrack across a sheltered and a more exposed section of shore. I used a belt transect with quadrats, recorded percentage cover, and analysed the results with a statistical test, then wrote frankly about the limitations, including uneven substrate and the fact that I sampled on only two days. Beyond the syllabus I have read Callum Roberts's The Unnatural History of the Sea, which gave me a long view of how fishing pressure changed marine ecosystems before anyone was measuring them, and I follow the Marine Biological Association's public articles to see current British research. I have also taught myself the basics of spreadsheets for graphing and am starting to use R for simple summary statistics, since I expect data handling to be a large part of the degree.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
For the past two years I have kept my own shore records at two small sites on the Wirral, visiting roughly monthly with a tape measure, quadrat frame and a borrowed identification guide. I photograph anything I cannot name and check it later, and I log air temperature, date and tide state. It is a modest project rather than a study, and the main thing it has taught me is discipline: my early notes were inconsistent, so I redesigned my recording sheet and now use the same method each visit. I have started noticing genuine changes, including more Pacific oysters at the lower site than when I began, which led me into reading about non-native species and how they spread through shipping and aquaculture. I volunteer with a local wildlife group on beach cleans and have helped with two of their litter surveys, sorting and tallying items by category. Sorting wet plastic fragments into categories in February is not glamorous, but it showed me how survey protocols make separate volunteers' data comparable. I also help at their public rockpool events, showing families how to handle crabs gently and return stones the way they were found, which has improved my ability to explain things simply. On Saturdays and Sunday mornings I work in a garden centre, mostly on tills and plant care. I answer customer questions about pond plants, drainage and pests, which requires admitting when I do not know and finding out. The job has taught me to stay patient during long shifts and to work within a team where tasks are shared without much discussion. At college I am part of the science society and gave a short talk on tidal zonation using my own photographs. In my own time I swim weekly at the local pool and am working towards being confident enough in open water for future fieldwork.
