Why do you want to study this course or subject?

For the last three years I have loaded, unloaded and watched a CNC saw and punch line cutting aluminium profiles for window frames. The work is repetitive, but the questions it raises are not. Why does one operator's set-up produce burrs while another's does not? Why do we keep a bin of offcuts that nobody has costed? When a setter explained why we changed feed rates for a harder batch of extrusion, I realised there was a body of knowledge behind decisions I had been treating as habit, and that I wanted access to it rather than working around its edges. Manufacturing engineering appeals to me because it sits between the physical behaviour of materials and the organisation of the people and machines that shape them. I am interested in how tolerances are chosen and how measurement error is accounted for, in tool wear, and in how production is laid out so that material does not travel further than it must. My Access course gave me the first proper vocabulary for this: statics, moments of inertia, stress and strain, and enough statistics to see why sampling a process is not the same as inspecting every part. I am applying now, rather than at eighteen, because I have seen what a factory actually is. I know I want to work in one as an engineer, ideally in process or production engineering, and I would rather spend four years learning properly than continue guessing from the shop floor.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

I finished school with GCSEs including a grade 5 in maths and a 6 in physics, and did not go on to A levels because I wanted to earn. Returning to study was a deliberate decision made in my mid-twenties. I enrolled on an Access to Higher Education Diploma in Science at my local college, studying two evenings a week and one day of my own time across a year and a half, and I retook GCSE maths alongside it, improving to a grade 7 because I knew my algebra would not carry me through an engineering degree. The Access diploma covered mechanics, materials, electricity and mathematics. The mechanics unit was the part I enjoyed most: resolving forces in a pin-jointed frame felt like a cleaner version of arguments I had heard at work about why a fixture kept shifting. For my extended project I compared three jointing methods for aluminium frames using published material property data, and the main thing I learned was how carefully you have to state your assumptions before a comparison means anything. My marks were distinctions in the mechanics and mathematics units and merits in the two laboratory-based units, where writing up clearly was harder for me than the practical work. I have since been teaching myself to use a free CAD package, modelling simple brackets and a bench vice, and reading The New Science of Strong Materials by J. E. Gordon, which explained cracks and brittle failure in a way that stayed with me. Studying while on shifts has made me organised about time in a way I was not at sixteen.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

At the window components factory I started on packing and moved to operating the cutting and punching line. I run set-ups from a job sheet, check first-off parts against drawings with callipers and a go/no-go gauge, and log scrap at the end of each shift. That logging taught me something practical: our scrap was concentrated in short-run jobs where the setter was under pressure to change over quickly. I raised it with our supervisor and we began writing down the tooling positions for repeat short runs so they did not have to be found again each time. It was a small change, suggested rather than led by me, but it showed me that recording what happens is the first step to improving it. Earlier, in a supermarket warehouse, I worked nights on pallet picking, which gave me a feel for how badly organised storage costs time. I am also one of four volunteers who run a Saturday bike repair session at a community centre, where I strip and rebuild hub bearings, true wheels and try to explain what I am doing to whoever brought the bike in. Diagnosing a fault from a noise, then checking whether the fix actually worked, is a habit I expect to need in a degree. Outside that I play five-a-side and have been learning to weld at a short evening course, mostly badly at first, now with reasonably tidy fillet welds in mild steel. Between shift work, college and volunteering I have had to plan my weeks tightly, and I am ready to give full-time study the same attention.
