Why do you want to study this course or subject?

I became interested in how bodies move while watching my younger brother relearn to walk properly after a broken ankle. Nobody in my family understood why the physiotherapist cared so much about how he shifted his weight, but I found the reasoning fascinating: that a small change in one joint quietly reorganises everything above it. Studying PE and Biology has given me a language for this. Learning about muscle fibre types, lever systems and the stretch-shortening cycle made me realise that human movement can be measured, predicted and improved, rather than simply admired. What draws me to kinesiology specifically is that it sits between the laboratory and real life. I want to understand force plates and oxygen uptake, but I also want to understand why my aunt gave up her exercise referral programme after three weeks. The biomechanics and physiology interest me most at present, though reading about exercise as a treatment for conditions such as type 2 diabetes has shown me how much the behavioural side matters too. I would like to work eventually in rehabilitation or community exercise provision, in the kind of area I live in, where facilities are limited and people are often told to be more active without being shown how. A degree that combines anatomy, mechanics, physiology and research methods seems the honest route into that work, and I am prepared for the statistics and laboratory reporting it involves.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

I am studying Biology, PE and Maths at A level, which between them cover most of the foundations I expect to need. Biology has been the most demanding and the most useful: the respiration and cardiovascular topics gave me the vocabulary for everything else, and the required practicals taught me to record methods properly, including the dull but necessary details of controlling variables. My coursework on the effect of temperature on enzyme activity was the first time I had to defend my results rather than just present them, and my teacher's comments on my error discussion changed how I write. A level PE has provided the direct route into kinesiology. I enjoyed the biomechanics unit most, particularly analysing angular motion and moments of inertia in sporting technique, and I have found that the theory holds up when I look at video of real runners rather than textbook diagrams. The sport psychology unit was less intuitive for me, but reading about self-efficacy and goal setting helped me make sense of why people stop exercising. Maths supports both: working with logarithms and interpreting graphs has made me more confident about the statistics I know a kinesiology degree will require, and I have started reading about standard deviation and correlation beyond the syllabus so that research methods modules are not a shock. I also completed an extended project on whether running shoe cushioning affects injury rates, which taught me to read academic abstracts carefully and to accept that evidence is often less conclusive than headlines suggest.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

Since Year 12 I have run with my college's informal running group, which has become the basis of a small project of my own. Using a free metronome app and my phone camera, I measured step rate for six volunteers, then asked them to run at a slightly higher cadence while I filmed them from the side. I compared still frames to see where their foot landed relative to their hip. The differences were small and my method was rough, but the exercise taught me a great deal about the gap between an idea and a measurement: my camera angle drifted, my volunteers changed their whole stride when they knew they were being watched, and three of them were too tired by the second trial to be comparable. Writing up what I would do differently was more valuable than the results themselves. I work Saturdays in a shoe shop, which has turned out to be unexpectedly relevant. Fitting school shoes for children means looking at feet all day, and I have learned to notice pronation, arch height and uneven wear patterns on returning customers' soles. It has also taught me how to explain something technical to someone who is tired and in a hurry, and how to be patient with a child who will not stand still. I volunteer fortnightly with a walking group for older residents run through my local library, where I mostly carry bags, keep the back of the group company and help set out chairs afterwards. Listening to members talk about knee pain and confidence on uneven pavements has given me a more realistic view of physical activity than my own running does. At home I take my younger sisters to school most mornings and help with reading practice, which has made me organised about deadlines because I cannot work late without planning ahead. Alongside this I have kept up swimming, badminton in a college lunchtime session, and a long-standing habit of borrowing far too many books from the library at once.
