Personal statement example

My interest in hydrography grew from a dissertation that began as a desk exercise. I wanted to know whether the sandbanks in the estuary near where I grew up had shifted in the way local sailors claimed they had, so I compared successive publicly available bathymetric surveys with coastal LiDAR tiles and older fair sheets held by the local records office. The comparison was harder than I expected. Vertical datums differed, the older survey had gaps where lines had clearly been abandoned in bad weather, and the resolution mismatch meant that some of the change I first got excited about was an artefact of interpolation rather than real sediment movement. Working through those problems taught me more than a clean result would have. I learned to read metadata carefully, to understand why chart datum and ordnance datum cannot be casually mixed, and to be honest in my write-up about the uncertainty attached to each conclusion. That experience is the main reason I now want formal training in hydrographic survey rather than a general environmental route.

My degree gave me the underpinning I need in coastal processes, tides, sediment transport and GIS. I took the quantitative options wherever they were offered, including a statistics and modelling module and a field course in which we ran a levelling traverse and a total station survey of a beach profile, repeating it over several days to capture change. I enjoyed the discipline of survey work: closing a traverse properly, recording booking neatly enough that someone else could check it, and accepting that a poor measurement is worse than no measurement.

Since graduating I have worked as a technician in a local authority drainage and coastal team. Much of my job is unglamorous: checking gully and watercourse records, assisting the surveyors with staff and GNSS rover work, processing point data into usable layers, and answering enquiries from residents. It has, however, given me real familiarity with coordinate reference systems, with the consequences of sloppy attribute data, and with the need to explain technical limitations to people who simply want to know whether their road will flood. I have also become the person colleagues ask when a dataset will not align, which has forced me to understand transformations properly rather than trusting default settings.

Outside work I sail dinghies at a club on the coast and help my uncle look after his small motor cruiser, including passage planning for short trips along the coast. I completed RYA Day Skipper shorebased theory last winter, largely to be more useful on board, and it sharpened my understanding of how charted depths, tidal curves and safety clearances are actually used by the people who depend on them. Comparing the simplified information on a chart with the dense survey data behind it made me curious about how soundings are reduced, how uncertainty is communicated, and why some areas carry source diagrams warning of old or sparse data. I have been reading around the subject independently, including material on multibeam systems and IHO survey standards, and following consultations on seabed mapping for offshore wind.

I am applying now because I have gone as far as I can by teaching myself. I want structured instruction in acoustic systems, positioning and attitude sensors, tides and data processing, together with time on the water, so that I can work competently on nearshore and port surveys. My aim is to qualify as a hydrographic surveyor with a consultancy or port authority, and in the longer term to specialise in repeat surveys of changing coastal and estuarine seabeds, where careful comparison over time genuinely matters.
