Why do you want to study this course or subject?
What draws me to human sciences is that the questions I find most interesting refuse to sit inside one subject. In Biology I learned how variation in a population arises and is inherited; in Geography I studied why life expectancy in two wards of the same city can differ by years. Neither course, on its own, explained the gap between those two kinds of answer. Reading Wilkinson and Pickett's The Spirit Level sharpened this for me: their argument that more unequal societies tend to fare worse on health and social measures depends on how you choose your comparisons and what you accept as evidence, and I found myself arguing with the graphs as much as agreeing with them. That felt like useful discomfort rather than a dead end. Thinking, Fast and Slow was similar. Kahneman's account of fast, intuitive judgement and slower, effortful reasoning gave me language for something I had noticed in my own survey work, where my first impressions of a place were often confidently wrong. I want a degree where genetics, demography, ecology and social science are taught alongside each other and where I am expected to say which method suits which question. My Maths A level matters here too: I enjoy the statistics modules most, and I would rather be able to interrogate a dataset than take a summary of it on trust. Studying people through several lenses at once seems to me the honest way to study them at all.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
Biology has given me the mechanisms I return to constantly, particularly population genetics, natural selection and the limits of heritability estimates. Geography has trained me in the messier side of evidence: sampling strategies, the modifiable areal unit problem in disguise when we compared census data at different scales, and how migration is measured and mismeasured. Mathematics contributes the tools, especially hypothesis testing, correlation and regression, and I have become properly cautious about confidence intervals since a practical where our small sample produced a striking result that vanished when the class data were pooled. My EPQ asked whether access to urban green space is distributed fairly across my town. I read planning documents, used open data on park locations and deprivation deciles, and wrote about the difference between a park existing and a park being usable, which led me into work on the psychology of perceived safety. Writing 5,000 words taught me to define terms before arguing with them. I also took part in a school reading group where we discussed anthropology extracts; a passage on kinship terminology in different societies made me realise how much I had assumed the word cousin meant the same thing everywhere. Alongside this I have kept up conversational Urdu at home, which has been surprisingly relevant when thinking about how questionnaires translate and what gets lost when they do.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
Over two spring terms I carried out my own small survey in the park nearest my house, recording how many people used three different entrances at fixed times on Saturday mornings and noting weather and whether the bordering path was lit. It was ordinary, repetitive work. I learned to keep a consistent protocol, to write down conditions I had not planned to measure, and to resist reading a trend into six data points. When I presented the results to my Geography class, the most useful criticism was that my timings favoured people without caring responsibilities, which is exactly the kind of blind spot I want to be better at spotting. With a classmate I organised an information stall about blood and stem cell donation for our year group. We split the work clearly: she handled permissions and the room booking, I prepared the factsheet and checked every claim against NHS Blood and Transplant guidance. Around forty students stopped to talk, and several older ones asked questions we could not answer, so we noted them and followed up by email. My Saturday job at a garden centre has taught me more about patience and explaining things simply than any lesson; customers arrive with a dead plant and a vague description, and getting to a useful answer means asking better questions. Two afternoons a week I collect my younger cousins from school and help with reading and homework until their mum finishes work. Watching a six-year-old learn to decode words has made abstract ideas about development feel concrete, and it has certainly made me organised about my own deadlines.
