Why do you want to study this course or subject?

My grandfather has had the same allotment plot for nineteen years, and for the last four I have been the person who turns up with him on Sunday mornings. What began as carrying buckets became an interest in why things worked: why his runner beans cropped well in a wet summer while the courgettes rotted, why the far end of the plot stays claggy after rain while the near end drains freely. He works largely by memory and habit, and I found I wanted explanations that went further than that. Reading around the subject showed me that horticulture is where plant science, soil physics and practical decision-making meet, and that appealed to me far more than laboratory biology on its own.

The part I keep returning to is soil. After reading about soil structure and aggregate stability I started paying attention to how our beds behaved after digging, and I now understand why my grandfather's habit of leaving the heavy clay strip under a green manure over winter was more sensible than my instinct to fork it over. I am also drawn to protected cropping, because the balcony chilli plants I grow at home have taught me how quickly light, watering and humidity decisions show up in a plant. A degree would let me study plant physiology, propagation, crop nutrition and soil management properly, and connect them to commercial and amenity growing rather than to one small plot. In the longer term I would like to work in production horticulture or in soil and crop advisory work, where technical understanding is used to help growers make decisions. I want a course with glasshouse and field teaching alongside the science, because this is a subject that has to be tested on real plants.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

Biology has given me the foundations I use most. Plant transport, photosynthesis and the work on enzymes and temperature have all changed how I read growing advice: I can now see why glasshouse temperature management is a trade-off rather than simply keeping things warm. For my practical assessments I investigated the effect of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis in pondweed, which was a useful lesson in how much careful control a fair comparison needs, and in how easily a small measurement error can swallow the effect you are looking for.

Chemistry supports the parts of horticulture I am most curious about. Work on acids, bases and solubility helped me make sense of soil pH and nutrient availability, and why iron deficiency shows on acid-loving shrubs planted in limy ground. Titrations and moles have made me comfortable with the arithmetic of dilution, which already matters when I mix feed for my own plants at home. Geography has been unexpectedly valuable: the units on soils, water cycles and land use gave me vocabulary for texture, horizons and drainage, and a fieldwork trip measuring infiltration rates in two different land uses was my first proper experience of collecting data outdoors in imperfect conditions.

Alongside my subjects I read to fill gaps. I have worked through parts of the RHS Encyclopedia of Plants and Flowers for plant identification, and read Dave Goulson's writing on pollinators, which made me think harder about insecticide choices on amenity plantings. I also follow the AHDB's grower guidance online, which is where I first understood how much of commercial horticulture is about scheduling and consistency. I keep a notebook of sowing dates, varieties and outcomes on the allotment, and reviewing it each winter has been a better teacher than any single book.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

Since last January I have worked Saturdays and school holidays at a garden centre, mostly on the outdoor plant area. I water, deadhead, move stock and check plants for damage, and I tidy and reduce the ends of lines. I have learned to spot vine weevil damage on heucheras and powdery mildew on asters, and to explain honestly when a plant is past its best. Customers ask questions I cannot always answer, so I have got into the habit of checking labels and reference books afterwards; working out why a hydrangea's flower colour changes with soil pH, rather than just repeating that it does, was genuinely satisfying. The job has also taught me that plants suffer most from inconsistent routine, which is a lesson I apply on the allotment.

On the plot I now take responsibility for the propagation. I sow tomatoes, chillies and brassicas on a windowsill, prick out and pot on, and last spring I ran a small comparison of two sowing dates for tomatoes to see whether the earlier batch really cropped sooner; it did, but only by about ten days and with weaker stems. I built a cold frame from pallet wood and old glazing, which has improved hardening off considerably. My grandfather's knees are less reliable than they were, so I do the digging, edging and heavier watering, and we plan the rotation together each February.

Outside this I play in a local netball team, which has made me reliable about turning up and useful when a session needs organising, and I volunteer twice a term with a community group that maintains the planting around our library, mainly weeding, mulching and cutting back. That work has shown me how different amenity planting is from food growing: it has to look acceptable all year with limited labour, which shapes every plant choice. I am used to early starts, wet weather and repetitive tasks, and I still look forward to them.
