Personal statement example
My interest in health protection grew out of water. In the second year of my Environmental Science degree I spent a fortnight of fieldwork sampling streams and a handful of private wells in a hill farming area, and what stayed with me was not the chemistry but the conversations. Households drawing from their own boreholes had no idea whether anyone tested them, and the local authority officer we met described a long, patient effort to reach people who were not obliged to listen. That gap between a measurable hazard and the ordinary decisions people make has shaped what I want to study next.
My dissertation took this further. I combined publicly available bathing water classifications, rainfall records and land use data for one coastal catchment to examine how far wet weather explained variation in results. The analysis was modest in scope, and the correlations I found were weaker and messier than I expected, largely because of small sample sizes and the timing of sampling rounds. Writing it honestly taught me more than a neat result would have: I learned to read methodological appendices carefully, to distinguish an absence of evidence from evidence of absence, and to be cautious about drawing conclusions from routine monitoring data collected for regulatory rather than research purposes. It also convinced me that I want formal training in epidemiology and in the practicalities of outbreak investigation rather than continuing as an environmental scientist who occasionally touches on health.
My degree has given me useful foundations. Microbiology modules covered the main waterborne and foodborne pathogens and the basics of laboratory detection; an epidemiology option introduced study design, incidence and prevalence, confounding and the interpretation of risk estimates. I found the GIS coursework particularly rewarding and used it for a short independent project in which I mapped notifiable disease counts from published annual surveillance reports against area deprivation measures, mainly to teach myself how to handle small-area data responsibly and how easily thin data can produce striking-looking maps. I also took a statistics module using R, which I have since kept up with through self-directed exercises, because I know that competence with data is not optional in this field.
Alongside study I have worked weekends in a supermarket for three years, latterly as a trainer for new colleagues on the fresh food counters. Much of that role involves temperature logs, date checks, allergen labelling and explaining hygiene rules to people who are tired and busy. It has been an unglamorous but genuinely relevant education in how control measures survive contact with real workplaces: a procedure that is unclear, inconvenient or unexplained will be quietly abandoned. Volunteering at a community allotment, where I help coordinate a shared tool store and water butts, has similarly taught me how much depends on persuasion and routine rather than instruction.
I am drawn to postgraduate study in health protection because it brings together environmental hazards, communicable disease and the systems that respond to both. I am keen to build strength in outbreak investigation methods, surveillance systems, risk communication and the legal frameworks that underpin protective action, and to improve my quantitative skills to a level where I can contribute to analysis rather than only interpret it. In the longer term I would like to work in a health protection team, ideally on environmental and waterborne risks, and I am aware that this will require years of supervised practice. My honest position is that I have a relevant scientific foundation, a clear sense of the questions that interest me, and the willingness to work carefully through detail that this field demands.
