Personal statement example

My interest in global change biology grew out of something fairly mundane: three years of writing down when the blackthorn came into flower along a lane near my home for a community recording scheme. When I began my degree I assumed that kind of record-keeping was a hobby sitting well apart from real science. Learning how phenological datasets are assembled, gap-filled and analysed changed my view, and it shaped the direction of my final year.

For my dissertation I worked with a county recording group's archive of first-flowering dates for six hedgerow species, combined with gridded temperature data. I fitted linear models of flowering date against mean spring temperature and tested whether responses differed between species, using R for the analysis. The results were modest and in line with published work, but the process taught me more than the findings. Recorder effort was uneven across years, some sites had been renamed, and 'first flowering' meant slightly different things to different volunteers. I spent weeks on data cleaning and had to write honestly about the uncertainty this introduced. I also read around the limits of correlational approaches, including debate over whether temperature-based models capture chilling and photoperiod requirements well enough to project future phenology. That tension between the data we have and the mechanisms we would like to represent is what draws me to further study.

Elsewhere in my degree I was most engaged by ecology, plant physiology and statistics, and I chose options in biogeography and quantitative methods where they were available. I found generalised linear models and mixed effects models difficult at first, particularly the interpretation of random effects, and worked through problem sets with a study group until they made sense. I have since continued teaching myself: I have worked through introductory material on spatial data handling in R and made a start on Python, mainly so that I can read and adapt code rather than treat models as closed systems. I am aware that my modelling background is at an early stage, which is precisely why I want structured training in ecosystem and Earth system approaches, remote sensing and experimental design under changing conditions.

Since graduating I have been working part-time in a garden centre, advising customers on planting. It is ordinary retail work, but it involves explaining drought tolerance, hardiness ratings and the timing of planting to people with very practical concerns, and it has made me think about how species ranges and growing seasons are discussed outside academic settings. Alongside this I share care of my younger brother, who is ten, which means my study has to fit into reliable blocks of time. I have become organised out of necessity: I plan my week in advance, and I completed my dissertation analysis to schedule while working two evenings and most weekends.

I also volunteer once a month with a river monitoring group, taking invertebrate kick samples and recording water clarity and flow. Standing in a shallow river sorting cased caddisfly larvae in a tray has given me a useful sense of scale. The samples feed into a national dataset, and I can see how much careful, repetitive fieldwork sits underneath any statement about freshwater condition.

I hope to work in applied ecological monitoring or climate impact assessment, ideally for an environmental agency or a conservation organisation, where long-term datasets are used to inform decisions. A master's in global change biology would give me the quantitative and conceptual grounding to contribute properly to that work, and I would particularly welcome the chance to undertake an extended research project. I am prepared for the workload and keen to be taught by people who work with these datasets daily.
