Personal statement example
My interest in geoinformatics grew out of a piece of undergraduate coursework I initially found frustrating. We were asked to assess flood exposure for a small catchment using freely available elevation and land cover data, and I spent most of a fortnight discovering how much of the answer depended on decisions I had made almost without noticing: the resolution of the digital elevation model, how I handled sinks, whether I reprojected before or after clipping. The map I produced looked authoritative, but I could have produced a noticeably different one by making equally defensible choices. That gap between the confidence of a finished map and the uncertainty buried in its production is what I now want to study properly.
My degree gave me a broad grounding in physical and human geography, and I chose spatial analysis, remote sensing and quantitative methods options wherever they were offered. For my dissertation I examined how allotment and community growing space in my home borough had changed over fifteen years, combining council planning records with OpenStreetMap features and aerial imagery I digitised myself. I taught myself enough Python to automate the tedious parts, particularly cleaning inconsistent address fields and batch-calculating accessibility distances from the street network. The results were modest, but the process taught me that data preparation is not preliminary to the analysis; it largely determines what the analysis can say. My marker's main criticism was that I had not tested how sensitive my accessibility measure was to the walking speed I assumed, which was fair, and it is the sort of methodological carefulness I want to develop further.
Since graduating I have worked three days a week as a data assistant for a housing association. Much of the role is unglamorous: maintaining records of repairs, checking property attributes, producing reports on response times. It has, however, taught me a great deal about real organisational data. Addresses are duplicated, block boundaries are recorded inconsistently, and historical records were digitised at different times by different people. I built a simple map in QGIS showing repair volumes by block, which my manager now uses in monthly meetings, and the main lesson was how much explanation a map needs before colleagues trust it. Learning to say clearly what a layer does and does not show has been as valuable as any technical skill.
Alongside work I share care for my grandmother with my mother, which shapes how I organise my week, and I keep the volunteer rota for a community garden near my flat. Both involve the ordinary discipline of planning around other people's availability and following through on commitments. The garden work also keeps me honest about the limits of data: last year we argued over whether a corner plot was too shaded to plant, and the aspect analysis I ran was less useful than a volunteer who had simply watched the light there for six summers. Good spatial work needs local knowledge as well as coordinates.
From the MSc I want stronger foundations in programming, spatial databases and the handling of uncertainty, and structured experience with remote sensing beyond the introductory level. I am particularly interested in how urban environmental data is generated and by whom, since much of what I encountered in my dissertation existed only because volunteers had mapped it. In the longer term I would like to work in local government or the housing sector, building spatial analysis capacity in organisations that hold a great deal of data but rarely have time to use it well. A year of concentrated technical study is the step I need to do that credibly.
