Personal statement example
My interest in food microbiology grew out of a fairly ordinary observation at work. On the supermarket deli counter, where I have worked part-time since my first year of university, the same product could be perfectly safe or a write-off depending on how long a lid had been left off, how cold the display genuinely was, and whether someone had used the right probe. The microbiology modules on my BSc in Food Science and Nutrition gave me the language for what I had been seeing: growth curves, hurdle technology, the difference between a spoilage organism that makes a product unpleasant and a pathogen that makes it dangerous.
My degree covered food chemistry, processing and nutrition, but the microbiology strand consistently held my attention. I enjoyed learning to think quantitatively about growth, and I found predictive modelling particularly interesting, especially the gap between what a model suggests and what happens in a real product with uneven structure and competing microflora. For my final-year project I looked at spoilage in home-style chilled sauces held at 4, 8 and 12 degrees, measuring pH, total viable counts and sensory deterioration over ten days. My results were not dramatic, but working through them taught me a great deal: I had to repeat one plate count series after realising my dilutions were inconsistent, and I learned to be honest in my write-up about the limits of a small sample. I achieved a strong mark and, more usefully, a clearer sense of how much care laboratory work demands.
Alongside my studies I have been a member of the university fermentation and brewing society, which has been an unexpectedly good complement to formal teaching. Running a sourdough starter and making kimchi and kombucha for society sessions made me pay attention to competitive microbial communities rather than single organisms, and to how pH and salt concentration shape what survives. When members asked whether a batch was safe, I had to explain acidification and spoilage indicators in plain terms, which sharpened my own understanding. I later read Michael Doyle and Robert Buchanan's Food Microbiology: Fundamentals and Frontiers in the library to follow up questions the society raised about biofilms and Listeria persistence in processing environments.
My supermarket work has given me practical discipline that I think matters in this field. Moving from the deli to the bakery meant learning different allergen controls and cleaning schedules, and I was asked to act as a hygiene buddy, showing new colleagues our handwashing, date-coding and temperature-recording routines. Doing this repeatedly taught me that controls only work when people understand why they exist; I also saw how quickly small lapses accumulate during a busy Saturday. I have kept a Level 2 food hygiene certificate current throughout and have taken on shift responsibility for opening checks.
I would like to study food microbiology at postgraduate level to move from a general food science background into genuine specialist competence, particularly in rapid detection methods, challenge testing and shelf-life validation. I am keen to spend more time on molecular techniques, which I met only briefly as an undergraduate, and to develop the statistical confidence to design and interpret microbiological studies properly. In the longer term I hope to work in technical or quality assurance roles for a chilled or ready-meal manufacturer, where shelf-life decisions are made under commercial pressure and need to rest on sound evidence. A research project in this area would be the part of the course I look forward to most, and I am prepared for the patience that laboratory work requires.
