Why do you want to study this course or subject?
Last summer I spent six Saturdays sitting on different benches along our high street with a notebook, recording where people actually chose to stop. The pattern surprised me: almost everyone gathered under the one mature lime tree outside the post office, even when empty seats stood twenty metres away in full sun. The council had installed the benches; the tree decided where people sat. That gap between what is designed and what is used is what draws me to environmental design.
I had assumed design meant objects until a Geography unit on urban heat and drainage made me look at the physical fabric of places differently. Our town centre floods at the same junction every heavy rain because the paving is sealed and the gradient sends water into a dip. Nobody chose that outcome, but a series of small decisions produced it. I want to work at the scale where those decisions are made, where planting, materials, light, sound and movement combine into somewhere people are willing to spend time.
Reading Jan Gehl's Cities for People sharpened this. His attention to eye level, walking speed and the ground floor of buildings gave me language for things I had noticed without being able to name. I am also interested in how environmental design must now answer to climate: shade, permeable surfaces, cooler streets and materials that can be repaired rather than replaced. A degree appeals because I need the technical grounding I cannot teach myself, particularly construction, environmental performance and how to represent ideas convincingly to people who will never read a plan drawing.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
My A-levels give me three useful angles on the subject. Art and Design has taught me to develop an idea through iteration rather than settle on the first version. My current project examines threshold spaces between buildings and pavements, and I have worked in collage, card models and measured drawing to test the same site in different media. Building a 1:50 model of a bus shelter taught me more about proportion in an afternoon than weeks of sketching had.
Geography supplies the systems thinking. Studying urban regeneration, water cycles and the carbon cost of construction helps me see a site as flows as well as form. For my independent investigation I compared surface temperatures on a paved square and a grassed verge using a borrowed infrared thermometer at three times of day, then considered the limits of a study with so few readings. Learning to state what my data could not show was as valuable as the results.
Mathematics underpins the parts of design I find most practical: scale, gradient, volume, and the confidence to handle figures for daylight or drainage rather than avoid them. Trigonometry became suddenly concrete when I worked out the shadow length a proposed canopy would cast in December.
Alongside coursework I use my college library and its ebook access. Alexander's A Pattern Language interested me for its claim that ordinary people can recognise good spatial arrangements, and I have been reading about street trees and soil volume, which is far less straightforward than planting a sapling and hoping.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
There are no architecture or design practices near me offering work experience, so I built my own project. Over three months I documented twelve sites in my town on a free mapping tool, photographing each at morning, midday and evening and noting shade, seating, noise, litter and who was present. I produced a short illustrated booklet and gave a copy to the library and to our college. Two members of staff pointed out that I had recorded nothing about accessibility, which I had genuinely not considered. I returned to four sites to note kerb heights, surface unevenness and step-free routes, and the booklet is better for it.
My Saturday job at a garden centre has been an unexpected education. Advising customers on plants for a shaded north-facing yard or a windy balcony means thinking about aspect, drainage and maintenance rather than appearance alone. I have learned which plants people abandon because they demand too much, which matters if you are specifying planting for a public space nobody is paid to water.
On our family allotment I rebuilt a collapsed raised bed from reclaimed scaffold boards and dug a soakaway to stop the path turning to mud. Measuring, levelling and working within the materials available was good practice in design constrained by budget.
I also volunteer at a monthly repair café, mostly taking names and testing lamps. Watching people decide whether something is worth mending has shaped how I think about permanence and repair in the built environment. These are modest experiences, but they have taught me to observe patiently, accept correction and finish what I start.
