Personal statement example

My interest in environmental biotechnology grew out of a fairly unglamorous experiment. For my final-year project I set up soil microcosms spiked with diesel and compared hydrocarbon loss in soil left alone, soil given nitrogen and phosphorus, and soil inoculated with a Pseudomonas isolate from a garage forecourt drain. The biostimulated microcosms performed best, but what stayed with me was how much the result depended on things I had initially treated as background: moisture content, how thoroughly I mixed the soil, and the fact that two of my replicates dried out over a warm weekend. Writing the discussion taught me more about the gap between a laboratory rate and a field outcome than any lecture had, and it is precisely that gap I want to spend a master's year working on.

My degree gave me a reasonable technical base. I chose modules in microbial physiology, biochemistry and ecology, and took a statistics and R module that I initially found difficult and eventually relied on heavily, using linear models to analyse my degradation data rather than running a string of t-tests as I had first planned. I also spent a semester on a group assignment assessing anaerobic digestion of food waste for a fictional local authority, which forced me to think about mass balance, retention time and, less comfortably, cost. I am now reading more widely around water treatment, and found the discussion of anammox and nitrogen removal in my wastewater reading genuinely surprising, because it showed how much of the engineering depends on maintaining slow-growing organisms rather than simply adding reagents. My aim in postgraduate study is to build stronger skills in bioprocess design, molecular community analysis and environmental monitoring, so that I can work in contaminated land or water treatment consultancy.

Alongside my studies I have worked weekends and holidays at a garden centre, mostly on the tills and the plant advice desk. It is ordinary work, but it has shaped how I explain things. Customers arrive with a dying shrub and a photograph, and I have learned to ask what the soil is like, how the water drains and what they have already tried, rather than immediately offering a product. Handling complaints about a failed hedging order taught me to stay calm and specific when someone is frustrated, which is not a skill I associate with lab work but which I suspect matters in consultancy. I was asked last summer to train two new seasonal staff on the plant care routine, and I wrote a one-page watering and labelling guide for the polytunnels that the team still uses.

I also volunteer with a river conservation group, joining monthly work parties clearing balsam and litter and helping with kick-sampling for invertebrate surveys. Identifying caddisfly and mayfly larvae in a tray on a riverbank is a useful corrective to thinking about pollution only as a chemical measurement, and the group's conversations about storm overflows are part of why wastewater treatment interests me. Within my university's microbiology society I helped run introductory sessions on streak plating and aseptic technique for first-year students, which improved my own hands at least as much as theirs.

I know a master's year is demanding, and I am ready for that. I would like to take on a substantial research project, ideally on bioremediation or biological nutrient removal, and to finish with the analytical and practical confidence to contribute properly to a technical team.
