Why do you want to study this course or subject?
The canal that runs behind my college is not beautiful, but it is busy. Herons stand on shopping trolleys, Himalayan balsam crowds the banks in August, and volunteers pull litter out of the water most Saturdays. Walking that towpath is what made me want to study ecosystem management rather than ecology alone. I am less interested in describing what lives somewhere than in the harder question of what can realistically be done about it, given who owns the land, who uses it and what money exists.
My Geography and Biology courses have pushed me towards the same point from different directions. In Biology I learned how nutrient loading changes which species can persist in freshwater; in Geography I learned that the decision to dredge, plant or leave a site alone is usually made by people balancing flood risk, budgets and public opinion. Reading around the subject has sharpened this. Isabella Tree's Wilding was useful less for the rewilding argument itself than for how much of the book concerns paperwork, neighbours and subsidy rules, and Dave Goulson's writing on insect decline showed me how much depends on ordinary land such as verges and gardens rather than nature reserves alone.
I want a degree that teaches survey methods and data handling alongside policy, land management and economics, because I have seen locally how a good ecological idea can stall when nobody has thought about maintenance after year two. Longer term I would like to work in catchment or protected site management in the UK, where the habitats are heavily modified and the interesting work is compromise rather than restoration to some earlier state.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
I am taking Biology, Geography and Chemistry, and all three feed into my interest in how ecosystems are monitored and managed. Biology has given me the ecological grounding: energy transfer, population dynamics, and the practical business of sampling, including quadrat and transect work and the statistical tests used to decide whether a difference is meaningful. I found the fieldwork sessions genuinely revealing, particularly how much variation comes from where you choose to put the quadrat.
Chemistry has turned out to be more relevant than I expected. Understanding buffering, solubility and redox has helped me make sense of water quality data, and titrations and standard solutions taught me the discipline of recording exactly what I did. When I read about phosphate in rivers or liming acidified upland streams, I can follow the chemistry rather than just the headline.
Geography has supplied the human half. My independent investigation compared vegetation cover and soil compaction on two sections of towpath, one heavily used by cyclists and one quieter, using a simple pin-frame method and a soil penetrometer borrowed from college. The results were less clear than I hoped because the quiet section was also shadier, and writing that up honestly taught me more about confounding variables than any textbook. I also enjoyed studying catchment management and the tension between engineered flood defences and natural flood management.
Alongside my A levels I have been working through free online material on GIS and made a rough map of green space within walking distance of my college, which I want to develop properly at degree level.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
For the past two years I have worked Saturdays and school holidays at a garden centre, mostly on the outdoor plant area. It is ordinary retail work, but it has given me a working familiarity with several hundred plants, their soil and light requirements and how they behave in a wet Midlands winter. I answer a lot of customer questions, which has taught me to explain things without jargon and to admit when I need to check. I have also seen how commercial pressures work: bedding plants sell, native hedging often does not, and peat-free compost still prompts complaints about performance. Those conversations gave me a more realistic sense of how public attitudes shape what actually gets planted.
I volunteer roughly monthly with a friends-of-the-park group. We do balsam pulling, path clearance, bulb planting and occasionally the less glamorous job of recording what the group has done so the council can see it. Listening to the committee argue about whether to mow a meadow strip in June or September showed me that management decisions are rarely purely ecological. I helped with a simple wildflower count last summer, walking a fixed route and recording species in flower, and learned how easily recording effort varies between people.
At college I run a small lunchtime group that looks after raised beds in the courtyard. We have kept a log of what survived, which is mostly hardy herbs. I also play netball for a local club, which keeps my weekends structured and has taught me to be useful within a team rather than always leading it.
Together these have confirmed that I like outdoor, practical work with a written record behind it, which is what drew me to this course.
