Why do you want to study this course or subject?

My interest in dietetics started with something ordinary: working out how to feed five people from one shopping trip. Two evenings a week I cook for my family, and I became curious about why the advice I read varied so much between sources. That pushed me towards the science rather than the headlines. In Biology I enjoyed the digestive system and enzyme specificity most, and it struck me that dietetics sits exactly where that biochemistry meets someone's actual kitchen, budget and preferences.

Reading around the subject has made the profession clearer to me. The Eatwell Guide gives sensible population-level advice, but I've come to see that its usefulness depends entirely on translation: a person with coeliac disease, poorly fitting dentures or a limited food budget needs the principle applied, not repeated. I read a general human nutrition textbook borrowed from the college library and was surprised by how much of it concerns measurement and uncertainty, from the limits of self-reported food diaries to the difficulty of establishing requirements for individuals rather than groups. I also follow the British Dietetic Association's public-facing food fact sheets, partly because I find it interesting to see complicated evidence written plainly.

What appeals to me about dietetics specifically, rather than nutrition more broadly, is the clinical accountability and the placements. I want to be trained to assess a real patient, justify a plan against evidence, and then adjust it when it doesn't fit their life. I would like eventually to work in a hospital or community team, and I am drawn to renal and gastrointestinal dietetics, where the chemistry I enjoy has very direct consequences for what someone can eat.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

My A-levels give me a good foundation for this course. Biology supplies the physiology I'll build on: absorption in the small intestine, the liver's role in metabolism, and hormonal control of blood glucose. Chemistry has been the most demanding subject and probably the most useful. Practical work on titrations and volumetric analysis taught me to be careful with dilutions, units and repeat readings, and the organic chemistry topics on carbohydrates, lipids and proteins mean nutrient structures already make sense to me rather than looking like new vocabulary. PE has covered energy systems, hydration and body composition, and it has also shown me how confidently unevidenced dietary claims circulate in sport.

For my EPQ I investigated fibre in secondary school packed lunches. I designed a short questionnaire, collected responses from 41 students with my tutor's approval, and used food composition tables to estimate fibre content. Estimating was harder than I expected: portion sizes were vague and brands unspecified, so I had to explain in my report why my figures were indicative rather than precise. I concluded that fruit was reasonably common but wholegrain breads and pulses were rare, and I recommended being cautious about generalising from a single college. Presenting this to my class taught me to separate what my data showed from what I suspected.

Alongside this, GCSE Mathematics and statistics work in Biology have prepared me for handling anthropometric and dietary data, and I am comfortable with spreadsheets for calculations and simple charts.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

On Saturdays I work in a supermarket's in-store bakery and café. I handle food hygiene routines daily: temperature checks, allergen labelling, separating equipment and recording waste. Customers ask regularly about allergens, and I've learnt to check the documentation and say clearly when I don't know rather than guessing, which feels like a habit worth carrying into clinical work. The job has also taught me to stay accurate and polite when the queue is long.

Once a month I volunteer at a community lunch club run from a local church hall, mostly serving food, clearing tables and sitting with people while they eat. I help the organiser plan the menu and we adapted one dish after several guests said it was too difficult to chew; we now offer a softer alternative each week. Talking with older guests has shown me that appetite, company, transport and money shape what people eat as much as nutritional knowledge does. Some guests said the meal was the main reason they left the house that day.

At home I share responsibility for my two younger brothers' meals, including one who dislikes most vegetables, so I've had plenty of practice with small, realistic changes instead of complete overhauls. Playing for the college hockey team has improved my teamwork and my ability to take direct feedback from a coach, and I organised a shared post-match snack rota with another player for our home fixtures.

Together these commitments have built the reliability, communication and time management I'll need for a degree with placements.
