Why do you want to study this course or subject?
The community repair session I help at runs on the first Saturday of the month in the library meeting room. People bring lamps, toasters, jeans with worn knees, a sewing machine nobody can thread. My job is the sign-in table: I write down what the item is, what is wrong with it, and whether it gets fixed. After a year of those lists, patterns appeared. Kettles fail at the flex. Toasters cannot be opened without breaking the plastic clips. Almost nothing arrives with any instructions. That table taught me that a product is not only the object; it is the decisions someone made years earlier about screws, spare parts and whether anyone would ever look inside.
Design innovation attracts me because it treats those decisions as the real material. In Product Design I enjoy making things, but I am more interested in the stage before the sketch, where you work out whose problem this is and whether the problem has been described properly. I want to learn structured methods for research, testing and framing briefs, rather than relying on my own guesses about what people need. I am also drawn to the strategic side: understanding how a design idea survives inside an organisation with budgets and deadlines, which my Business A level has started to show me. I expect the course to be uncomfortable at times, because it asks you to abandon ideas that you like, and I would rather be pushed to justify a decision than praised for a neat drawing.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
My A levels give me three useful habits. Product Design has taught me to work in iterations and to document them honestly, including the versions that failed. For my coursework I am developing a storage and labelling system for a household where a member of the family needs the same items to stay in the same place; I interviewed my mother and two of her friends from a support group before I began drawing, and rewrote my brief twice because my first version solved a problem nobody had. I learned to use foam board and a scalpel properly, and to make a mock-up rough enough that people feel able to criticise it.
Geography has been an unexpected support. Studying urban regeneration and how places change gave me vocabulary for context: who is consulted, who benefits, what happens over ten years rather than ten weeks. Fieldwork taught me to collect data in a way I could defend afterwards, including sampling and the limits of what a small survey can show. Business covers costs, market research and the difficulties of introducing something new into a company that is doing quite well already.
Alongside college I have taught myself the basics of free CAD software, working through tutorials to produce simple assemblies, and I sketch most days in a cheap A5 notebook. I read Donald Norman's The Design of Everyday Things, which gave me the ideas of affordances and signifiers, and I now notice them constantly in door handles and ticket machines. I have also read parts of Victor Papanek's Design for the Real World, which argues that design should serve genuine needs rather than manufactured ones; I do not agree with all of it, but it made me think about who designers actually work for.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
At home I help get my younger brother ready and out to school on weekday mornings and look after him most Saturdays while my mother works. He needs routine, clear sequences and warning before anything changes. Over the years we have built our own small systems: a picture strip by the door, a particular order for putting on shoes and coat, a timer he can see. None of this was designed by professionals, and that is partly my point. Watching which of our homemade adaptations he actually uses, and which ones he ignores completely, has taught me more about testing than any textbook. He is a very direct user. If something does not work, it is abandoned within a day.
This has made me patient and observant, and it has also taught me to manage time tightly. I plan coursework around mornings and Saturdays, which means I start earlier than most of my class and keep a written schedule.
I work about eight hours a week in a garden centre café, mainly on the till and clearing tables. It is ordinary work, but I have become interested in flow: where queues form, why the milk jug is always in the wrong place, why customers hesitate at the cake counter. I suggested moving the card reader and the cutlery tray to opposite ends of the counter so that people paying were not blocking people collecting, and my supervisor agreed to try it. It helped a little, which was a reasonable result for a change that cost nothing.
At college I volunteer as a peer mentor for first-year students, mostly helping them get organised. Outside that I bake and I run three mornings a week, both of which keep my head clear. I bring practical making skills, evidence of listening carefully to users, and the reliability that comes from having responsibilities that cannot be postponed.
