Why do you want to study this course or subject?

What draws me to design engineering is the point where a sketch has to survive contact with materials, tolerances and the person holding it. In Physics I enjoy calculating why a beam deflects; in Product Design I enjoy holding something and noticing that the grip is too short for an adult hand. I do not want to choose between those two habits of thinking, and design engineering seems to be the discipline that insists on both.

This became concrete when I tried to fix a problem of my own. I play clarinet in a community wind band and rehearse in three different halls, so my folding music stand travels in a rucksack and has been bent twice. Taking it apart, I could see the failure was not bad luck: the load from a heavy folder passed through a single riveted joint with almost no material around it. Reading about stress concentrations in my textbook, and later looking at Gordon's Structures, gave me a vocabulary for something I had already felt when the joint flexed under my thumb. Gordon's argument that shape and material choice cannot be separated changed how I sketch. I now draw the load path before I draw the outline.

I am also interested in how design decisions carry consequences beyond performance. My EPQ examines repairability in consumer products, comparing components that are fastened, clipped or bonded, and I have found that choices which speed up assembly often make a product impossible to mend. That trade-off, between manufacture, cost and the life of an object after it is sold, is the kind of problem I want to spend my degree learning to reason about properly rather than by instinct.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

My A levels give me the analytical base I need. Maths has been the most useful subject for design work: mechanics has let me estimate loads and moments on my own projects instead of guessing, and calculus has made graphs of material behaviour readable rather than decorative. In Physics I particularly enjoyed the materials topic, where measuring Young's modulus for different wires showed me how much careful method matters when a number is only as good as the way it was gathered. My results improved after I started writing up experiments as if someone else would have to repeat them.

Product Design has taught me process. For my coursework I worked with a teacher who supervises the college's outdoor planters and needed a way to move heavy bags of compost over a gravel path. I interviewed her, watched the actual journey with a stopwatch, and produced a low-sided trolley with a tipping frame. Iterating through card models, a plywood mock-up and finally a welded steel frame taught me that early models are for answering questions, not for looking finished. My first CAD version was far too heavy; recalculating and switching to box section rather than solid bar cut the mass considerably and forced me to learn how to check my own assumptions in SolidWorks.

Alongside lessons I have taught myself basic Fusion 360 through online tutorials and used the college 3D printer to test press-fit joints, keeping a notebook of clearances that worked and failed. I am aware that my workshop experience is limited to hand tools, a lathe under supervision and MIG welding taster sessions, and I am looking forward to structured training in manufacturing methods and in the mathematics behind simulation, which I currently use without fully understanding.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

On Saturdays and through the holidays I work at a garden centre, mainly on tills and restocking, and occasionally helping customers choose tools. It is ordinary work, but it has shaped how I think about users. I have watched several people struggle with the catch on our watering cans and explain, quite reasonably, that they could not tell which way it opened. Hearing the same complaint repeated, in the customer's own words rather than in a questionnaire, is better evidence than anything I invent at a desk. The job has also taught me to work steadily during a rush and to be the person who counts stock accurately when it is easier to estimate.

My clarinet playing has given me another kind of discipline. I have worked through graded exams over several years and now play second clarinet in the wind band, where a section has to listen and adjust constantly rather than each player following their own part. I also help set out chairs and stands before rehearsals, which is how I noticed the stand problem in the first place.

At college I volunteer at open evenings, running a small stand where prospective students try a simple bridge-building task with lolly sticks. Explaining why a triangulated design holds more weight than a square one has made me much clearer in my own head, and I have become better at asking questions rather than immediately giving answers.

I am organised out of necessity, since I plan around shifts, rehearsals and coursework deadlines, and I am comfortable being the person who redraws a design for the fourth time. Those are the habits I would like to bring to a design engineering degree and to the collaborative projects it involves.
