Why do you want to study this course or subject?
I became interested in data analytics through a geography coursework project on bus reliability in my town. I had assumed the buses on my route were simply unreliable, but when I collected arrival times at three stops over four weeks and put them into a spreadsheet, the picture was more specific than that: the morning services were usually close to timetable, while lateness built up steadily through the afternoon. What struck me was not the finding itself but how much the conclusion depended on choices I had made, such as which stops to sample and how I treated buses that never appeared at all. That ambiguity is what I want to study properly rather than guess at. I enjoy Mathematics most when it explains why a method works, and statistics appeals to me because it sits between calculation and judgement. Reading Tim Harford's How to Make the World Add Up sharpened this for me, particularly his argument that we should ask who is missing from a dataset before trusting a number; my own bus project had exactly that gap. A degree in data analytics attracts me because it combines the technical side I like in Computer Science with the questions about people and places that drew me to Geography. I am keen to learn to program to a standard where I can handle data that will not fit in a spreadsheet, to understand the statistical models behind common techniques, and to practise communicating results to people who will not read the workings. In the longer term I would like to work in analysis for a public body such as a transport authority or a local council, where decisions about services affect ordinary journeys like mine.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
I am studying A levels in Mathematics, Geography and Computer Science. Mathematics gives me the foundation I will rely on most: the statistics content has taught me hypothesis testing and correlation, and I have learned to be careful about what a significance result does and does not tell you. Working through mechanics has also improved my discipline in setting out reasoning clearly, which I have found helps when I later need to explain a method to someone else. Computer Science has taught me Python, including file handling, functions and basic data structures, and my current coursework project is a program that reads a CSV of match results and produces summary statistics and a simple text report. Writing it taught me how much of the work is checking assumptions about the input rather than the calculation itself, because the first version fell over whenever a field was left blank. I have also covered databases and written SQL queries with joins and aggregation, which I found unexpectedly satisfying. Geography contributes the applied side. Alongside my bus project I have studied urban change and data on migration and deprivation, which introduced me to indices built from several variables and to the difficulty of comparing areas fairly. Learning how the Index of Multiple Deprivation combines different domains made me think about how weighting choices shape a ranking. Outside lessons I completed a free online introduction to data visualisation and I read the Office for National Statistics blog fairly regularly for its explanations of how figures are produced. I have also started teaching myself the pandas library, working through tutorials with a dataset of daily weather observations.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
I am the fixtures secretary for my college badminton club, which has around twenty-five members. When I took the role the attendance and court bookings were kept on paper and the same three people ended up playing every week. I moved the records into a shared spreadsheet, added a column recording who had played whom, and used it to build a ladder that rotated pairings more evenly. After a term, average weekly attendance had risen from roughly nine players to fifteen, and two members who had nearly stopped coming returned. The committee asked me to keep running it, which I take as a reasonable sign the system was useful rather than just tidy. It also taught me that a tool only works if other people can use it, so I simplified the entry sheet after the treasurer told me it was confusing. On Saturdays I work on the customer service desk at a garden centre, handling returns, refunds and questions about deliveries. It has made me much better at asking questions before offering an answer, because customers often describe a symptom rather than the actual problem. I have also become quicker at explaining a policy without jargon, which I expect matters when presenting analysis. During a stock count I noticed our returns log showed a cluster of complaints about one brand of compost, and I mentioned it to the supervisor, who raised it with the buyer. At home I share cooking and shopping duties with my brother while our parents work evenings, which has taught me to plan a week and stick to it. That habit of scheduling has helped me keep on top of coursework deadlines alongside my job and the club, and I expect it will matter more at university.
