Personal statement example

My interest in condensed matter physics began with a second-year lab experiment that, on paper, looked dull: measuring the resistance of a semiconductor sample as we cooled it. Watching the resistance fall and then climb again, and then being asked to explain it using carrier freeze-out and scattering mechanisms, was the first time I understood that the properties of everyday materials are collective quantum effects rather than a list of constants to be looked up. Since then I have deliberately chosen the solid state end of every optional module available to me, and I would now like to study the subject at a level where the mathematics and the experiments meet properly.

My degree has given me the foundations I will need. I took quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, electromagnetism and a final-year solid state course covering crystal structure, phonons, band theory and superconductivity. My strongest marks have been in the more mathematical papers, and I have kept up my computational work: I learned Python properly in second year and used it throughout my final-year project, which involved computing the electronic band structure of a two-dimensional square lattice within a tight-binding model and examining how the density of states changed as I varied hopping parameters and added a second orbital. The project taught me more about careful checking than about physics at first, because my early dispersion curves were wrong in a way that only showed up when I tested a limiting case against the analytic result. Reproducing that limit correctly, and then seeing features such as the van Hove singularity appear where they should, gave me real confidence in the method. Reading around the project, Ashcroft and Mermin's treatment of the tight-binding approximation and of the Fermi surface was where the module material finally fitted together for me.

Alongside my studies I have had ordinary but useful experience. During one summer I was accepted onto a short supervised placement in a university materials characterisation laboratory, where I spent a week shadowing the technical staff. I was an observer for most of it: I watched samples being mounted for X-ray diffraction, logged measurements under supervision, helped label and store specimens, and sat in on a discussion about why a set of peaks was broader than expected. I did not run the instruments myself, but seeing how much of the work is sample preparation, calibration and patient record-keeping changed how I read experimental papers, and it confirmed that I would like to be in a laboratory rather than purely at a desk.

I have worked weekends in a garden centre for three years, where I now train new seasonal staff on the till and the plant ordering system, and I tutor two GCSE maths students. Explaining simultaneous equations each week has made me much clearer in the way I present arguments, which showed in my project viva. Both commitments have taught me to plan my weeks around fixed obligations, which is how I completed my project report without a last-minute rush.

For postgraduate study I am most drawn to low-dimensional and strongly correlated systems, particularly how measurable quantities such as conductivity and magnetic response emerge from interactions between electrons. I would welcome modules that extend my knowledge of many-body techniques and of modern experimental methods, and I am keen to undertake an extended research project, whether computational or experimental. In the longer term I would like to continue to doctoral research, but I want first to build the depth that a master's year offers.
