Why do you want to study this course or subject?

The program I am most pleased with is dull to describe: a script that takes the messy spreadsheet my college hands out for peer mentoring shifts and turns it into a calendar file people can import onto their phones. It took me three weekends, mostly because real data is inconsistent in ways I had not anticipated, with names spelled two ways and one week where two rooms were recorded in the same cell. Making it work properly meant asking the mentors how they actually read the rota, not just how the file was laid out. That gap between what a system does and what a person needs from it is what draws me to Computer Applications rather than a purely theoretical route. I want to spend my degree on databases, interface design, testing and the discipline of turning a vague request into working software. Studying Computer Science at A level has shown me I enjoy the underlying ideas, particularly how data structures change what a program can do efficiently, but the parts I return to voluntarily are always applied: normalising a table properly, or working out why an input field confuses people. I am also interested in how organisations end up relying on tools nobody planned, like the layered spreadsheet my manager at work uses for stock. A course that combines programming with systems analysis and user-centred design seems the right place to learn how to do that work well rather than by guesswork.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

My A levels give me a practical foundation for this course. In Computer Science I have worked in Python and studied SQL, object-oriented design and how processors handle instructions; my coursework project is a revision tracker that stores topics and confidence ratings and suggests what to review next, which has taught me more about designing a sensible schema than any exercise did. Mathematics supports this directly. Working through sequences, logarithms and probability has made me more comfortable with reasoning about growth and about the likelihood of edge cases appearing, and the habit of setting out each step of a proof clearly has improved how I structure code and comment it. Geography is less obviously connected but has been useful in unexpected ways: I have learned to interpret datasets on population and land use, produce clear graphs and write arguments that acknowledge the limits of the evidence. Our fieldwork report on river discharge involved collecting our own measurements and then explaining honestly why some readings were unreliable, which is the kind of write-up I expect applied computing to require. Outside lessons I have read Clean Code by Robert C. Martin, which changed how I name variables and break up long functions, and I have followed introductory material on relational database design. I have also started teaching myself basic HTML, CSS and JavaScript so I can put a usable front end on the tools I write instead of leaving everything at the command line.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

Alongside college I work Saturdays and holidays on the tills and plant area of a garden centre. Serving customers who want advice rather than a transaction has made me much better at listening to what someone actually needs, and I have had to stay calm and organised on busy bank holiday weekends. I have also seen how much a business depends on systems that are only partly fit for purpose: our stock sheet is maintained by hand, and watching colleagues work around it has taught me that a technically neat solution is useless if it does not match how people work under pressure. I volunteer as a peer mentor, meeting two Year 12 students each fortnight to help them plan their study time. This is where the rota tool came from, and it was genuinely collaborative: another mentor handled collecting everyone's availability while I wrote the code, and we agreed the format together after a first version he found hard to read. Learning to accept that feedback without defending my original design was useful. For two years I have played in a local netball team, which has kept me committed to turning up for other people even when the weather is poor and I have deadlines. Together these commitments have taught me to manage a week with fixed obligations in it, and to break a task down until it is small enough to finish. I would bring that steadiness, and a real interest in software people can use easily, to a Computer Applications degree.
