Why do you want to study this course or subject?
The community fridge where I volunteer sits in a church hall between a nursery and a hairdresser's. Every fortnight we sort donated food, weigh what has to go in the bin, and talk to whoever comes in. What drew me towards this subject was noticing how often the problem in front of us was not really about food itself. A woman who took only tinned goods explained she was between flats and had no fridge. Someone else left the loose carrots and took packaged ones because her children would not eat anything that looked odd. Those conversations made me want to understand households properly: budgets, kitchens, habits, confidence, the shops people can actually reach on foot.
My A-levels have given me two useful halves of that picture. Biology and Food Science and Nutrition explain what a body needs and how food behaves, while Sociology has taught me to look at structures rather than blaming individual choices. Community Science appeals because it refuses to separate the two. I want to learn how to design and evaluate something that works in a real hall or kitchen, not only in theory, and how to measure whether it helped. I am particularly interested in food skills work with families, and in how services can be shaped with the people using them rather than for them. I would like to work eventually for a local authority public health team or a food partnership, and I am aware that means learning to handle data, write clearly for non-specialists and sit patiently in meetings.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
Biology has been the most demanding of my subjects and the most rewarding. Digestion and metabolism gave me the vocabulary to read nutrition guidance critically, and the practical work taught me to be honest about uncertainty. In one required practical on enzyme activity my results were inconsistent until I realised I was timing from the wrong point; redoing it properly taught me more about method than any mark.
Food Science and Nutrition has combined laboratory and applied work. For coursework I planned and evaluated a set of meals for a specified group, which meant using nutrient analysis software, thinking about cost per portion and accepting that a technically excellent plan is useless if nobody wants to eat it. I learned to compare my analysis against the Eatwell Guide and government recommendations rather than trusting my assumptions.
Sociology has shaped how I read evidence. Studying research methods showed me why questionnaires produce the answers their wording invites, and work on families and inequality gave me a framework for what I see at the fridge. I have also started reading more widely than my syllabus, including Bee Wilson's First Bite, which argues that food preferences are learned rather than fixed. That idea sits directly behind the kind of community food education I want to study.
Alongside my A-levels I completed a food hygiene certificate for my job, and I have kept a notebook of the science behind things I cook, which has made revision feel connected to something I actually do.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
For about a year I have been running my own small investigation into sourdough at home, mostly because my first loaves were dense and I wanted to know why. I began recording hydration, room temperature, the time between feeding the starter and mixing, and how the crumb turned out, then changed one variable at a time. Warmer proving and a longer autolyse made the clearest difference. It is a modest project, not a piece of research, but it taught me patience with slow data and the value of writing things down at the time rather than from memory. It also gives me something to talk about with customers at the bakery, where I work Saturdays on the counter and packing. That job has taught me how to handle a queue, explain allergen information accurately and notice what people buy at the end of the day when things are reduced.
At college I worked with two other students on a survey of food waste in our canteen. We agreed early to keep the task small: one week, one lunch service, a short tally of what was left on trays plus eight short interviews. I drafted the questions and revised them after the first two interviews because people kept answering about home rather than college. We presented our findings to the catering manager, who pointed out that portion sizes were fixed by her supplier contract. That was a useful correction, and it taught me that recommendations need to be feasible for the person receiving them.
At the community fridge I now help train new volunteers on date labels and cold storage. I also mentor a Year 9 student in maths for half an hour each week through a school scheme, which has improved how I explain things without talking down to people. Outside all this I play in a local netball team, where being reliable matters more than being the best player on court.
