Why do you want to study this course or subject?

I became interested in cognitive psychology through something small: noticing that I could recite the opening lines of poems I had learned for English but could not hold a six-digit code long enough to type it in. My teacher pointed me towards work on short-term and working memory, and I started reading about why one kind of remembering feels effortless and another collapses in seconds. What drew me in was not the fact that memory is limited, but that the limits are measurable and testable. Someone designed a task, timed it, counted errors, and produced a description of a mental process nobody can see directly.

Since then I have been most interested in attention and how it interacts with memory. Reading about the Stroop effect changed how I think about automatic processes, because it shows that a skill as useful as reading can actively interfere with a simple task. I am also curious about eyewitness memory and the idea that remembering is reconstructive rather than a replay, which I first met through summaries of Loftus's work on misleading questions. It raises questions I find genuinely difficult: if memory is rebuilt each time, how much confidence should courts, or any of us, place in a vivid recollection?

I want to study cognitive psychology because I enjoy the combination of careful experimental design and statistics with questions about ordinary experience. I am drawn to a degree where I would learn to run and analyse studies properly, rather than only read about them, and where I would be pushed to judge whether an effect is real and how large it actually is.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

My A-level Psychology course has given me the foundations I use most. The research methods unit taught me operationalisation, independent and repeated measures designs, and the reasoning behind significance testing, and I found I liked the strictness of it: deciding in advance what would count as evidence. Studying the multi-store and working memory models together was useful because it showed how a model gets revised when new findings, such as evidence from patients with specific deficits, do not fit the simpler account.

A-level Mathematics has made the statistical side much less intimidating. Working through probability and distributions helped me understand what a standard deviation is actually describing, and I now read graphs in psychology articles more sceptically, looking at spread and sample size rather than just the headline difference between means. I completed a piece of coursework in Psychology comparing two explanations of forgetting, which forced me to weigh interference and cue-dependent accounts against the evidence rather than simply listing them.

English Literature contributes differently. Building an argument about a text, anticipating the strongest objection to it and choosing evidence carefully are the same skills I need when writing a discussion section. It has also improved my ability to write clearly under time pressure, which I know matters for essay-based assessment.

Outside lessons I use my local library and second-hand books. I have read Kahneman's Thinking, Fast and Slow, which introduced me to heuristics and to the debate about how far intuitive judgement can be trusted, and I follow up ideas through open-access articles when I can find them. I am currently trying to understand the distinction between availability and representativeness properly, because I noticed I had been using the terms loosely.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

Without access to a laboratory, I designed a study I could run at home. I printed thirty word lists and tested twenty friends and relatives on immediate serial recall, comparing lists of short familiar words with lists of longer, less common ones, using my phone as a timer and reading items aloud at a steady pace. I found that recall was generally poorer for the longer words, which fits what I had read about word length effects, but running it myself taught me more about the difficulties than the result did. My pacing was not consistent, several participants had already heard me describe the study, and my youngest cousin treated it as a competition. I wrote up what I would change: recorded audio rather than live reading, a script that gives no hint of the prediction, and separate practice trials. I also learned to keep a proper record of who had taken part and under which condition, because I nearly lost track.

I work Saturday mornings in a bakery, serving customers and handling the till during the busiest part of the week. It is repetitive work, but it has made me observant about how people behave when they are hurried, and reliable about turning up early and finishing tasks properly. I have also become the person who trains new starters on the till, which means explaining the same process in different ways until it makes sense to someone.

On Wednesdays I help at a reading group for primary-age children at the library, listening to them read aloud and choosing books with them. Watching a seven-year-old decode a word letter by letter one week and read it fluently the next has given me a concrete sense of how effortful reading is before it becomes automatic, which connects directly to my interest in automaticity and interference.

I play in a local five-a-side team most weeks, mainly because I like having something in my week that has nothing to do with studying.
