Why do you want to study this course or subject?

In Psychology I was taught that the brain stores memories, and in Biology I was taught how a neuron fires. What nobody explained was how the second thing becomes the first. That gap is what pulled me towards cognitive neuroscience rather than either subject on its own. I want to study the level where biological mechanism and mental experience meet: how patterns of electrical activity in tissue produce something as specific as recognising a friend's face across a crowded room, or losing a word you knew five seconds ago.

My interest sharpened when I read Oliver Sacks's The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat. What stayed with me was not the strangeness of the cases but the logic behind them: the fact that damage to particular regions produces particular losses, and that these dissociations tell us something about how the healthy brain divides up its work. Later I read parts of Eric Kandel's In Search of Memory, which showed me how much can be learned about memory from the simple nervous system of a sea slug, and how patient a research career actually is. The idea that findings in Aplysia connect to human learning helped me understand why animal work and human imaging sit in the same field.

I am drawn to methods as much as to findings. When I learned that fMRI measures blood oxygenation rather than neural firing directly, and that EEG has excellent timing but poor spatial precision, I stopped reading brain-imaging headlines in the same way. I now want to know what a study actually measured before I believe what it claims. A degree that teaches me experimental design, neuroanatomy and statistics together, and lets me handle real data, is what I am looking for. Long term I am interested in research into attention and working memory, possibly applied to how people learn, but I expect the course itself to redirect me.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

My A levels feed directly into the subject. Biology has given me the cellular foundation: membrane potentials, synaptic transmission and the structure of the nervous system, plus the discipline of writing up practicals with honest error analysis rather than tidy conclusions. Our dissection and microscopy work taught me to record what I actually observed, which sounds obvious until your slide looks nothing like the textbook diagram.

Psychology has given me the other half. I studied the multi-store and working memory models, Baddeley and Hitch's distinction between the phonological loop and the visuospatial sketchpad, and case evidence from patients with amnesia. The research methods strand has been the most useful part of my education so far. Learning about operationalising variables, counterbalancing, demand characteristics and the difference between statistical significance and practical importance changed how I read any claim about behaviour. I chose to write my extended piece of coursework on whether laboratory memory tasks tell us much about everyday remembering, which forced me to weigh internal validity against ecological validity properly rather than reciting both terms.

Maths matters more than I first realised. Working through the statistics module, including distributions, sampling and hypothesis testing, has made me comfortable with the arithmetic behind experimental results. I taught myself the basics of calculating standard deviation and running a t-test in a spreadsheet, and I have begun learning some R using free online tutorials, mostly to plot data and understand what a boxplot is hiding. I know a neuroscience degree will demand more quantitative work than A level, and I would rather arrive already used to finding numbers interesting.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

To test my own understanding of experimental design, I ran a small project on reaction times. Using a free online timing task, I measured simple visual reaction times in twenty classmates under two conditions: quiet, and while they listened to speech through earphones. I randomised the order, gave everyone the same instructions from a script, and discarded the first practice block. The distracted condition was slower on average, but the spread was wide and two people were faster, which taught me how easily a small sample and an uncontrolled measure like screen refresh rate can undermine a neat conclusion. Writing up the limitations was more instructive than the result.

My Saturday job in a garden centre café has been useful in less obvious ways. On busy weekends I hold several drink orders in my head while operating the till and answering questions, and I have noticed exactly the kind of interference effects I had read about: a customer speaking to me while I count change reliably costs me the count. The job has also built stamina, reliability and the ability to stay pleasant when a queue is long and the coffee machine is not cooperating.

For two years I have helped coach an under-twelves netball session at my local club. Explaining the same footwork rule in three different ways until it clicks has made me a clearer communicator, which I expect to matter when presenting data or working in a lab group. I also read New Scientist and listen to science podcasts on the bus, and I keep a notebook of questions I cannot answer yet, such as why sleep seems necessary for consolidating what I revised the night before. I am looking forward to a course where those questions get taken seriously and tested rather than simply discussed.
