Why do you want to study this course or subject?

The thing that pulled me towards climatology was not a single dramatic moment but a spreadsheet. For my Geography independent investigation I logged air temperature at twelve points on a transect from a retail park into a residential area with mature trees, repeating the walk on six evenings. The warm patches were where I expected them, near tarmac and brick, but the differences between two streets only a few hundred metres apart were larger than I had assumed, and my error bars were wide enough to make me cautious about the conclusions. Working out what I could actually claim from my data was more interesting than the result itself.

Since then I have wanted to understand the physics underneath the patterns rather than only describing them. In Physics I enjoy thermodynamics and radiation, and it has been satisfying to see why the vertical structure of the atmosphere matters, or why the energy balance at a surface depends on albedo, evaporation and conduction rather than sunshine alone. Reading Mike Hulme's Why We Disagree About Climate Change pushed me in a different direction, towards thinking about how uncertainty is communicated and why people with the same evidence draw different conclusions. Both sides of that appeal to me: the modelling and measurement, and the responsibility of explaining what the numbers do and do not show.

A degree in climatology attracts me because it combines the fieldwork and data handling I already enjoy with atmospheric dynamics, palaeoclimate records and numerical modelling that I have only met in outline. I am particularly curious about how proxy records such as ice cores and tree rings are calibrated, since that seems to be where careful statistics meets earth science. Longer term I would like to work in monitoring or climate services, producing information that councils, growers or water companies can use, which is why I want a course that takes measurement and programming seriously.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

My A-levels in Geography, Maths and Physics have been chosen deliberately to prepare me for a quantitative earth science degree. Geography has given me the atmospheric systems content and, more usefully, practice at designing an investigation, justifying a sampling strategy and writing up limitations honestly. Physics supplies the mechanics and thermal physics that sit behind atmospheric processes, and I have found the practical endorsement work valuable for thinking about instrument error, calibration and repeatability rather than just recording a reading.

Maths has been the subject I have had to work hardest at, and the one that has changed how I approach problems. Statistics has been immediately relevant: standard deviation, correlation and significance testing all appeared in my own temperature data, and understanding sampling distributions made me far more sceptical of small datasets, including my own. Calculus has helped me read graphs of rates of change as physical statements about how quickly energy or moisture moves.

Outside the syllabus I have been teaching myself Python using free online material, starting with plotting Met Office historical station data for Birmingham and calculating monthly anomalies against a thirty-year mean. It is slow work and my code is untidy, but I can now load a CSV, clean missing values and produce a time series plot without following a tutorial line by line, which felt like a real step forward. I also follow the Royal Meteorological Society's Weather magazine when copies reach the college library, and an article on how urban heat island intensity varies with wind speed made me rethink why my own results differed so much between evenings. I read a chapter at a time of an introductory atmospheric science textbook borrowed from my Physics teacher, which is harder than anything on my courses and has shown me the level I need to reach.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

I help run the weather club at college, which mainly means looking after a small automatic weather station on the flat roof of the science block. There are four of us on the rota. We download the data weekly, check the rain gauge for leaves, and once spent an afternoon working out why the anemometer readings had dropped, which turned out to be a loose fitting rather than a genuine calm spell. I now produce a monthly summary of temperature, rainfall and sunshine hours for the science corridor display, comparing each month with our own record and with a nearby Met Office station. When our rainfall total came out noticeably lower than theirs one autumn, I wrote a short note explaining that our gauge sits beside a wall and may be sheltered, which my teacher used as an example of siting effects with the year below.

On Saturdays and through the holidays I work on the plant advice desk at a garden centre. Customers arrive with a dead shrub in a carrier bag and expect an answer, so I have learned to ask questions before offering one: aspect, soil, drainage, how often they watered it during the dry spell. A surprising amount of the job is explaining weather. After a mild winter I had repeated conversations about bulbs coming up early, and after a late frost about blackened new growth on acers. Translating something uncertain into practical advice, without either overclaiming or being useless, is a skill I expect to need if I work in climate services.

I was also asked to present my temperature investigation at a college open evening, which meant condensing six weeks of work into three minutes for parents and prospective students. My Geography teacher nominated the project for a departmental commendation, which was a modest but encouraging recognition. Beyond that I play netball for a community team on Sunday mornings, where being reliable in a defensive position matters more than anything flashy, and I volunteer twice a term at a canalside litter pick organised by a local group. None of that is climatology, but it has taught me to turn up, work with people I did not choose, and keep going when conditions are unpleasant, which seems reasonable preparation for fieldwork.
