Why do you want to study this course or subject?

My interest in plants began with a very ordinary question: why did the rocket in the raised beds at our community allotment bolt within a fortnight while the same seed sown a month later cropped for weeks? I asked the volunteer who ran the plot, read about day length and flowering, and realised that something I had treated as bad luck was a measurable response to an environmental signal. That shift, from noticing plants to asking what governs them, is what draws me to botany rather than biology in general. What appeals to me academically is that plant science sits across scales. In Biology I have enjoyed photosynthesis most, particularly the limits imposed by the light-dependent reactions and by stomatal behaviour, because the same processes explain both a chloroplast diagram and why crops fail in a dry June. Reading around the subject has broadened this. Beronda Montgomery's Lessons from Plants made me think about how plants sense and respond to their surroundings rather than simply enduring them, and articles on mycorrhizal associations showed me how much of a plant's functioning happens through relationships with other organisms below ground. I want to study a degree where taxonomy, physiology, ecology and molecular work are taught together, with fieldwork and laboratory practicals, and where I can eventually specialise. My longer-term thinking points towards plant conservation or crop resilience, but I am aware that three years of teaching will give me a much better idea of which questions I am actually equipped to pursue.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

My A levels in Biology, Chemistry and Geography have each contributed something specific to my preparation. Biology has given me the core content I will build on, and I have found the practical endorsement particularly useful: dissecting flowers, using a light microscope to compare stomatal density on upper and lower leaf surfaces, and running chromatography on leaf pigments taught me how much careful technique affects whether results mean anything. My investigation compared ivy leaves from a shaded wall and an exposed fence, and I learned to be honest about confounding factors, since the two sites differed in moisture as well as light. Chemistry underpins more of plant science than I expected. Understanding buffers, pH and equilibria has made enzyme behaviour and nutrient availability in soil much clearer, and I am comfortable with the calculations involved in making up solutions accurately, which I know matters in a teaching laboratory. Geography has been an unexpectedly strong influence. Studying soils, water balance and ecosystem processes gave me vocabulary for things I saw on the allotment, and a fieldwork unit on a local river valley taught me systematic sampling, transects and the use of quadrats, alongside writing up data with appropriate caution. I also took an EPQ on whether urban green roofs support pollinators, which required me to read journal abstracts, judge which sources were reliable and accept that my conclusion had to remain tentative. Beyond lessons I attend a weekly college science reading group where we discuss a paper or news article; presenting on seed banks there improved my ability to explain technical material clearly.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

Two afternoons a week I help my grandmother with her shopping, appointments and paperwork. It is unglamorous, but it has shaped how I work: I plan around fixed commitments, keep revision to a realistic schedule, and have learned to explain things patiently to someone who finds new information tiring. It has also made me better at noticing detail, because small changes in her routine matter. On Saturdays I volunteer at a community allotment run largely by retired members. I began by weeding and watering and now take responsibility for the propagation area, sowing in trays, pricking out and keeping a notebook of sowing dates, germination rates and losses. Last spring I compared two batches of tomato seedlings potted on at different stages and recorded which transplanted better, which was rough and ready but taught me the value of consistent records and of asking what else might explain a difference. Talking to plot holders about varieties they have grown for decades has given me a practical respect for observation gathered over time. I have also had occasional weekend shifts at a garden centre, mostly watering, tidying stock and answering customer questions. Being asked why a hydrangea had turned a different colour, or why a houseplant's leaves were browning at the tips, pushed me to learn about soil pH and humidity properly rather than repeating what was on the label, and to admit when I did not know. Outside this I play netball for a college team, which keeps my weeks balanced and has taught me to contribute without needing to lead. Together these commitments have made me organised, steady and used to learning from people with more experience than me.
