Why do you want to study this course or subject?

What draws me to biokinetics is the idea that movement itself can be prescribed and measured, not just recommended in general terms. My father had a partial knee replacement two years ago, and although I was only ever the person counting his repetitions and reminding him to do them, I found the structure of his programme genuinely interesting. Each fortnight the exercises changed slightly: more range of motion, then more load, then single-leg balance work on the kitchen floor. Nothing about it was dramatic, and that is what struck me. Progress came from small, deliberately chosen increments and from someone having worked out which tissue needed what stress and when.

Reading around my Biology and PE courses pushed that curiosity further. I borrowed a copy of Tudor Bompa's writing on periodisation from the college library and found that the same ideas of progressive overload and planned recovery that shape an athlete's training season also underpin a rehabilitation plan; the difference is the starting point and the goal. I have also spent time on the NHS and Versus Arthritis pages about managing osteoarthritis through activity rather than rest, which surprised me at first, given how instinctive it feels to protect a painful joint.

I want to study biokinetics specifically because it sits between exercise science and healthcare. I am interested in exercise testing, in chronic conditions like type 2 diabetes and hypertension where activity is part of the treatment, and in the practical problem of designing something a real person will actually do on a Tuesday evening. I would like to learn the physiology properly before working with anyone, which is why a degree with laboratory work and supervised practice appeals to me more than a short qualification.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

My A levels in Biology, Physical Education and Mathematics have each contributed something I expect to use. Biology has given me the foundations of cell respiration, gas exchange and the cardiovascular system, and the practical work has taught me to be careful about method: my coursework investigation compared heart rate recovery after step tests at two different step heights, and my write-up spent as much space on the limitations of my controls as on the results themselves. Recovery rates varied far more between individuals than I had anticipated, which made me read about baseline fitness and how much data you need before a difference means anything.

Physical Education has covered muscle fibre types, energy systems and biomechanics, and the anatomy sections are the ones I return to. Learning about the stretch-shortening cycle changed how I think about the plyometric drills my netball coach sets, and I now understand why landing mechanics are emphasised so heavily for knee injury prevention in a sport with so much deceleration and pivoting.

Mathematics has been the most useful in an unexpected way. Working through statistics, particularly hypothesis testing and correlation, has made me much more sceptical when I read health claims online. I can now tell the difference between a study that reports a mean improvement and one that shows the improvement is unlikely to be chance.

Outside the syllabus I attended a free online course on the basics of exercise physiology last summer and keep a notebook of terms I look up afterwards. I read slowly and reread, which suits a subject where the same processes reappear in different contexts.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

For the past year and a half I have helped with the under-13s session at my netball club on Thursday evenings. My role is small: I lead the warm-up, set out cones and demonstrate drills while the qualified coach runs the main session. Leading warm-ups has taught me to explain the same movement three different ways until it makes sense to a twelve-year-old, and to notice who is guarding an ankle or standing oddly on one leg. I always pass that on to the coach rather than offering advice myself, which I think is an important habit to build early.

Alongside that I play for the club's senior second team. Being coached has been as instructive as helping to coach. I tore a ligament in my thumb in a match last winter and worked through a taping and strengthening routine from my GP, which gave me a clearer sense of how frustrating even a minor injury is when it stops you training normally.

I work Saturdays and some school holidays at a garden centre, mostly on the tills and restocking the outdoor plant area. It is not related to sport science, but it has made me reliable with early starts and comfortable dealing with people who are confused, in a hurry or dissatisfied. Explaining a refund policy calmly to a customer is not so different from explaining to a player why she is sitting out.

At home I still go through my father's maintenance exercises with him a couple of times a week when he loses momentum. It is unglamorous work and mostly involves encouragement rather than expertise, but it has shown me that the hardest part of any programme is adherence. I read a short guide on behaviour change for physical activity because of this, and I would like to study that side of the subject as seriously as the physiology.

I also cycle to college most days, which began as a way of saving bus fares and has become the part of my routine I would miss most.
