Why do you want to study this course or subject?

My interest in aviation grew from a question I could not answer. Standing on a footbridge near East Midlands Airport with my dad, watching freight aircraft land in the dark at three-minute intervals, I wanted to know who decided that order, and why one aircraft held while another turned straight onto final approach. Reading about airspace structure and separation minima afterwards, I realised aviation is less about individual aircraft than about a system that has to stay predictable while weather, demand and delays keep changing it. That is the part I want to study properly. What draws me is the balance between rules and judgement. Regulation sets out what must happen, but someone still has to sequence traffic, re-plan a fuel load after a runway change, or decide whether a slot can be recovered. I have started following how airports publish noise and runway operation reports, and I find it interesting that decisions I once assumed were purely technical involve local residents, airlines and cost. A degree that covers airline and airport operations, air law, human factors and safety management suits the way I think, because I like problems where the constraints are fixed and the solution has to be defended. Longer term I am drawn towards air traffic management or airport operations, and I would like to spend the degree finding out which side of that suits me better.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

Maths is the subject that has given me the most transferable ground. Mechanics, particularly resolving forces and working with vectors, made aerodynamic explanations far easier to follow, and statistics taught me to be careful about small samples, which matters when people quote delay figures without context. In Physics I enjoyed the fluids and pressure material most, and our work on measurement uncertainty changed how I read data: I now look for how something was measured before I accept what it shows. Geography has been more useful than I expected. A unit on transport and globalisation had us examine why regional airports depend heavily on a small number of routes, and I wrote a coursework piece comparing surface access to two UK airports, using timetable data and journey-time estimates. It made me think about airports as parts of a wider network rather than isolated sites, and it taught me to build an argument from sources that do not entirely agree. I completed the college's extended STEM project in a team of four, designing a payload for a high-altitude weather balloon launch organised with a local group. My role was the data logging and the pre-launch checklist. I learned to write instructions that someone else could follow under time pressure, and to record temperature and pressure readings against altitude rather than just collecting numbers. Our first sensor mount failed a shake test, so we redesigned it in foam and tape, which was unglamorous but worked. Outside lessons I read Handling the Big Jets by D. P. Davies, which was harder than I anticipated but useful on why large aircraft behave differently near the limits of their envelope, and I read the Air Accidents Investigation Branch bulletins for general aviation, where the recurring themes of workload and distraction are more instructive than the technical detail.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

For two years I have volunteered at a model aircraft club that flies from a field outside the city. I began by retrieving models and now keep the flight log and give the short safety brief to visitors: frequency checks, where to stand, which direction we are flying and who has control. It sounds minor, but a busy Sunday with fifteen pilots and one strip needs an order of operations, and I have learned that a calm, standard phrase works better than a detailed explanation when someone is about to launch. Watching experienced members handle a crosswind landing, and hearing them talk through their decisions afterwards, has taught me more about airmanship than anything I have read. On Saturdays I work on the customer service desk of a DIY store, handling returns, click-and-collect and complaints. The queue does not stop while you look something up, so I have become good at taking ownership of a problem, explaining what I can and cannot do, and staying polite when someone is annoyed with the shop rather than with me. I was asked to help train two new starters on the returns system, which I took as a sign that my managers trusted my consistency. These are the skills I expect to matter in operations work: clear communication, accurate records, and keeping a steady tone when things are behind schedule. I also help my younger brother with his maths homework twice a week, which has sharpened my ability to explain the same idea in more than one way. Alongside this I have kept up swimming with a club, training two evenings a week, which gives me a routine and a break from screens. I am a methodical, patient worker who prefers to check something twice, and I am looking forward to the structure and discipline of a course where accuracy genuinely matters.
