Why do you want to study this course or subject?

I first sat behind a mixing desk because nobody else volunteered. Our college drama group needed someone to run sound for a one-act play, and I put my hand up mainly because I liked the look of the faders. What kept me there was discovering that the desk was a physics problem I could hear. Pulling 250Hz out of a radio mic changed a muddy voice into a clear one; nudging a reverb send made a bare stage feel like a corridor. I wanted to know why, not just which knob to turn, and that question has shaped the last two years.

Audio engineering appeals to me because it sits exactly where my strongest subjects meet. In Physics I enjoy waves and resonance most, and it is satisfying that standing waves in a pipe and room modes in a rehearsal space are the same idea wearing different clothes. In Music I have learnt to listen analytically, to notice when a vocal is fighting the guitars for the same space rather than simply thinking a mix sounds wrong. Maths gives me the confidence to read about decibels, sampling rates and filter slopes without skipping the equations.

I am drawn to the parts of the field that are less glamorous than record production: intelligibility, gain structure, why a hall that sounds warm for a string quartet is unusable for spoken word. Reading about the Haas effect made me listen differently to delay settings on a PA, and I have started paying attention to how much of a good result comes from loudspeaker placement before any processing happens. I would like a degree that teaches the acoustics and signal theory properly alongside studio and live practice, so that my instincts have something underneath them. Long term I am interested in live sound and installation work, though I expect three years of study to broaden that rather than narrow it.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

My A-levels are Physics, Music and Maths, which between them cover most of the ground I need. Physics has been the most directly useful: our work on waves, interference and simple harmonic motion gave me the vocabulary for phase cancellation, which I had already met practically when two mics on the same drum made it sound thin. Electricity modules helped me understand impedance and why a long unbalanced cable picks up hum, something I had previously treated as bad luck.

Maths has trained me to be careful with logarithms, which matters more in audio than I expected. Working comfortably with logarithmic scales means decibel arithmetic feels ordinary rather than mysterious, and I can reason about headroom instead of guessing. Trigonometry and functions have made introductory reading on Fourier analysis approachable, and I have worked through beginner explanations of how a complex waveform can be described as a sum of sine components.

Music has been equally important. Harmony and analysis coursework forced me to describe sound precisely, and performing on clarinet in the college wind band has taught me how ensembles balance themselves acoustically before anyone amplifies them. For my composition portfolio I produced a short piece using recorded acoustic sources rather than presets, editing and layering them myself, which was my first sustained experience of building something from raw audio rather than mixing an existing band.

My extended project explored whether cheap acoustic treatment made a measurable difference to a small room. I took frequency response measurements in a college practice room using a measurement microphone borrowed from the music department and free analysis software, then repeated them with duvets and blankets on stands as makeshift absorption. The results were modest and messy, but the low-frequency problems stubbornly stayed while the flutter echo reduced noticeably, which taught me a lot about the difference between treating a room and pretending to.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

Sound for college drama has been my main practical education. Over four productions I have moved from following someone else's cue sheet to writing my own, plotting radio mic changes for a cast of twelve, labelling channels clearly enough that a substitute could take over, and testing every pack before doors open. I now arrive early to walk the room, because I learnt the hard way that a level set in an empty hall is wrong once bodies absorb the high frequencies. For our last show I built a simple foldback mix so the cast could hear a recorded underscore without it bleeding into the vocal mics.

On Saturday mornings I help at a community music club where young players rehearse in a church hall. I set up and tear down a small PA, mic up an acoustic guitar and a cajon, and try to keep everything feeding back as little as possible in a very reflective space. Working with beginners has made me better at explaining things simply: why standing behind a speaker is a bad idea, why holding a microphone by the grille sounds strange. It has also taught me patience with equipment I cannot replace when it fails mid-session.

I record demos for friends' bands on a two-input interface in my bedroom, tracking guitars and vocals in separate passes and mixing on headphones with occasional checks on a cheap speaker. One of these recordings was used for a band's entry to a local youth music showcase, and they were selected to play, which pleased me more than any of my own work has.

My weekend job on the tills at a garden centre is unrelated but useful. Serving customers during busy weekends has made me calmer under pressure and better at reading whether someone wants help or wants to be left alone, which transfers directly to working with nervous performers. Cashing up and reordering stock has also made me organised about paperwork, and I keep my own kit inventory with cable counts and repair notes.
