Why do you want to study this course or subject?
For most of my twenties I worked on buildings that had already been designed. As a maintenance technician for a housing association I spent my days in plant rooms, loft spaces and communal risers, fixing the consequences of decisions someone else had made years earlier. Some blocks were straightforward to look after; others had boiler flues routed through cupboards that tenants had no reason to keep clear, or extract fans in bathrooms that vented into unventilated voids. The pattern I kept noticing was that the fabric, the services and the way people actually lived in the flats had been thought about separately. Architectural engineering appeals to me because it treats them as one problem. I want to understand the calculations behind heat loss, ventilation rates and structural loads properly, rather than inferring them from what has gone wrong. My Access course has already changed how I see this: learning to work with thermal conductivity and U-values gave a number to something I had only understood as a cold north-facing wall with mould in the corner. I am also interested in retrofit, since most of the housing stock I worked on will still be standing in forty years and cannot simply be replaced. A degree that combines building physics, structures and services is the route into that work, and after seven years of practical exposure I would rather design carefully than keep repairing.
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
I left school with GCSEs including grade 6 in mathematics and grade 5 in English, then went straight into work rather than college. Returning to study at 28 was a deliberate decision, and I am now in the second term of an Access to Higher Education Diploma in Engineering at my local college, studying mathematics, physics, engineering principles and materials. Mathematics has been the most demanding and the most satisfying part. I had used trigonometry for pipe offsets without ever calling it that, so trigonometric identities and later calculus felt like being given the proper names for tools I had been improvising with. Differentiation took me several weeks of evening practice before it settled, and I now work through past paper questions on Sunday mornings because I want the fluency rather than just the pass. In physics I have enjoyed statics and moments, which connect directly to the beams and lintels I have seen propped and replaced. For my materials assignment I compared concrete, timber and steel for a small pedestrian footbridge, considering durability and embodied carbon as well as strength, and my tutor's feedback pushed me to be more careful about citing sources properly. Alongside the course I have been reading about building physics and have worked through introductory material on thermal bridging and airtightness. I also completed a short online course in AutoCAD to make sure I can produce and read drawings to a reasonable standard before starting a degree.
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
My most useful experience comes from ordinary maintenance work. Before the housing association I spent three years assisting a heating and plumbing installer on domestic jobs, including boiler replacements, unvented cylinders and radiator systems. I learned to set out pipework in awkward existing buildings, to read manufacturers' instructions closely, and to explain to householders why a job would take two days rather than one. As a technician I carried out repairs across around four hundred flats, kept records of what I had done, and attended out-of-hours call-outs. That taught me to diagnose calmly with incomplete information, to ask tenants the right questions, and to write clearly enough that a colleague arriving next could follow my reasoning. I worked closely with a surveyor on a damp investigation in one block, taking readings and photographs for her report, and seeing how she built an argument from evidence is part of why I applied for this course. Outside work I coach an under-elevens five-a-side team on Saturdays, which is mostly organisation, patience and making sure everyone gets a turn in goal. I also helped my sister strip and reinsulate a loft last winter, which was a good reminder of how much of insulation performance depends on fitting it without gaps. I am used to early starts, physical work and studying afterwards, and I have kept up my Access grades while working three shifts a week, so I know I can manage a demanding timetable.
