Why do you want to study this course or subject?

My fortnightly shifts at a community city farm began as something to fill a Saturday and turned into the reason I want to study animal science. One of my jobs is weighing the pygmy goats and recording it on a chart by the feed store. Over a few months I noticed that the two kids penned nearest the public path were gaining more slowly than their siblings, and the staff explained it was probably a mixture of visitor feeding, competition at the trough and the stress of constant handling. I had assumed growth was mostly a matter of what went into the bucket. Realising that behaviour, housing and physiology were all tangled together made me want to understand animals as whole systems rather than as a feeding chart. Since then I have followed that curiosity into my A-level Biology work, particularly digestion and homeostasis, and into reading about ruminant nutrition and the way rumen microbes allow cattle and sheep to use food we cannot. I am drawn to animal science rather than veterinary medicine because the questions I keep returning to are about populations and management: how to feed animals well, how to measure welfare honestly, and how livestock fit into arguments about land use and emissions that I also meet in Geography. I would like to work in nutrition or welfare advisory work eventually, and a degree that combines physiology, genetics, behaviour and practical husbandry is the right foundation for that.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

Biology has given me the core of my preparation. The modules on transport, digestion and the control of internal conditions are the ones I return to most, and required practicals have taught me to be patient with method: I learned more from a poorly controlled enzyme experiment, where I had not properly stabilised temperature, than from the write-up that went smoothly. Chemistry supports this directly. Understanding buffers, equilibria and organic functional groups has made topics like rumen pH and the structure of dietary fats far less mysterious, and titrations have trained me to work accurately with small volumes and to record uncertainty rather than hide it. Geography has been an unexpectedly useful third subject. My coursework on land use change in a river catchment involved fieldwork, sampling decisions and writing up data I had collected myself, and it introduced me to the trade-offs between agricultural production, water quality and habitat that animal science cannot avoid. I have also taken an EPQ-style extended piece for my school's enrichment programme on whether insect protein could replace soya in poultry feed, which pushed me to read beyond textbooks and to notice how often claims rest on small trials. Alongside lessons I have read Temple Grandin's writing on handling systems and animal perception, which changed how I watch the farm's sheep move through a race, and I follow the AHDB and Farmers Weekly for the practical side of livestock management. I am most comfortable working from evidence, and I like subjects where numbers and living animals meet.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

At the city farm I muck out, mix feed, check water and help with the public sessions. Handling sheep for foot trimming taught me that confidence comes from calm, predictable movement, and helping during a routine health check showed me how much information staff read from body condition, coat and demeanour before touching an animal at all. I have also learned to accept that not everything goes well: a hen we had been treating for a respiratory infection did not recover, and being part of that conversation was a useful reminder that welfare decisions are rarely tidy. Being one of the youngest volunteers in a team mostly of retired people has made me better at listening, and at asking questions without pretending to know more than I do. At home I look after my two younger brothers several evenings a week while my mum works shifts, which means cooking, homework supervision and getting everyone out of the house on time. It has made me organised and realistic about planning study around other commitments; I do most of my revision early in the morning because that is when the house is quiet. My Saturday job in a garden centre involves advising customers, restocking and handling the till, and I have become much better at explaining things simply, whether that is compost choice or why the guinea pig food is where it is. I play netball for a local club, which keeps my week balanced. Together these commitments have taught me consistency, and I am looking forward to bringing that to laboratory work, farm placements and a demanding degree.
