Why do you want to study this course or subject?

The gulls on our high street are treated as a nuisance, but they are also the reason I want to study animal behaviour. Working early shifts at a bakery, I noticed that certain individual gulls arrived before the bins were put out, and that they watched the door rather than the bins. That looked like learning rather than luck, and I wanted to know how you would test the difference. Reading around the question led me to ideas about behavioural flexibility in urban animals, and to John Alcock's textbook on animal behaviour, borrowed through my college library, which helped me see how a single observation can be broken into questions about causation, development, function and evolutionary history. Psychology A-level has been useful in an unexpected way: studying classical and operant conditioning, and the difficulty of inferring internal states from behaviour, made me more careful about what I claim an animal is thinking. Biology gave me the other half, particularly the topics on natural selection and on nervous coordination, where I could see behaviour as something with physiological machinery behind it rather than an unexplained output. What draws me to a degree is the chance to work with proper methods, ethograms, sampling rules, statistics, so that patterns I notice informally can be tested properly. I am especially interested in how animals adjust to human-altered environments, whether that is foraging on food waste or nesting on flat roofs, because those questions matter for how towns are managed as well as being interesting in themselves.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

My A-levels in Biology, Psychology and Geography fit together more closely than I expected. In Biology, the practical work has been the most valuable part: running a required practical on the effect of temperature on enzyme activity taught me how much of a result depends on controlling variables I had not thought about, and my independent investigation on invertebrate distribution across a shaded and unshaded section of the college grounds forced me to think about sampling bias when animals move. Psychology has given me research methods in more depth than my friends studying other science combinations, including inter-rater reliability, operationalising behaviour into observable categories, and the ethics of observational research, all of which I have applied to my own recording. I also gained from studying case studies where conclusions outran the evidence, which has made me sceptical of neat animal stories. Geography contributes the environmental side, particularly coastal processes and urban land use, and taught me to read maps and spatial data, which I used when deciding where to place my observation points. Statistics has been the area I have deliberately worked on, teaching myself to run a chi-squared test properly after meeting it briefly in Biology, and I am now comfortable with basic spreadsheet functions, pivot tables and simple graphs. I chose an extended essay option on animal welfare assessment, which introduced me to the problem of measuring welfare through behavioural indicators rather than assuming we know what an animal wants.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

For the past fourteen months I have kept a systematic record of bird activity at two sites: a feeder in my grandmother's garden and a car park near the promenade. I use ten-minute scan samples at fixed times, recording species, number of individuals and behaviour categories I defined myself, then correct my categories when they turn out to be ambiguous. Two hundred and forty sessions later I have a spreadsheet that shows clear seasonal changes in which species dominate the feeder, and a pattern of gull activity that rises sharply around midday near takeaway outlets. I know the limits of this: single observer, no marked individuals, no control sites, and my times were chosen around shift work rather than randomly. Submitting records to a national garden bird survey taught me how standardised protocols make data comparable, and how frustrating it is to discard a session because I arrived late. My bakery job has built stamina and reliability, and the early starts mean I am used to working before anyone else is awake, which suits fieldwork. On the community allotment I help with composting and have learned a surprising amount about slugs, pollinators and the arguments between volunteers about whether to control them. Volunteering at a homework club, explaining ideas to eleven-year-olds who are certain they cannot do science, has improved how clearly I explain things. I would like to bring the patience these commitments have needed into a degree where observation is a skill to be trained rather than a habit.
