Why do you want to study this course or subject?

My interest in anatomy started with a question I could not answer in a Biology lesson. We were labelling a diagram of the knee and I asked why the same joint that lets a netball player pivot is also the one that tears so often. My teacher explained the trade-off between mobility and stability, and how the shape of the femoral condyles and the position of the cruciate ligaments follow from that compromise. What struck me was that the structure itself contained the explanation. Since then I have wanted to study the body in that way: not as a set of names to memorise, but as an arrangement where form, function and vulnerability are connected.

What draws me to anatomy specifically, rather than a broader biology degree, is the emphasis on structure at every scale. I enjoy histology in my A level work as much as gross structure, because the microscopic organisation of tissue explains why bone repairs and cartilage struggles to. Reading parts of Gray's Anatomy for Students in the college library, I found the regional approach unexpectedly satisfying, since it treats the body as layers you work through rather than isolated systems. I have also been reading about the history of anatomical study and how much of our understanding came from careful, repeated observation and dissection, which has made me think seriously about the ethical responsibilities that come with working on donated human tissue.

I want a degree where I spend time in the dissection room and the histology lab, and I am drawn to the range of paths it opens, from research and imaging to teaching anatomy or applying later to graduate medicine. For now, my motivation is simpler: I find the subject genuinely interesting to work at, and I want to know the body properly.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

I am studying A levels in Biology, Chemistry and Psychology, which between them cover most of the groundwork anatomy demands. Biology has given me the physiology I rely on most: cardiac cycle and the conducting system of the heart, gas exchange surfaces, muscle contraction at the level of actin and myosin, and the structure of the nervous system. Chemistry matters more than I expected when I started. Understanding protein structure and bonding has made collagen and its role in connective tissue far clearer, and enzyme kinetics and buffers have helped me follow how tissue is fixed and stained for microscopy.

My Biology practical work has been the most useful preparation. I completed a required dissection of a heart and later asked to repeat it in my own time, because the first attempt taught me how much I had misread from textbook diagrams. Tracing the coronary vessels and opening the ventricles to compare wall thickness told me more than a week of revision. I also worked through microscopy practicals on plant and animal tissue, and I have become careful about drawing what is actually on the slide rather than what I expect to see.

Psychology has added a different angle. Studying the biological approach, localisation of function and the methods used to investigate the brain has shown me how anatomical structure is inferred from imaging and case evidence, and how cautiously those inferences should be drawn. Writing essays on research methods has improved my ability to judge whether a study supports its conclusion.

Across all three subjects I have learned to work steadily rather than in bursts. I keep condensed notes for each topic and test myself against past questions, which suits a subject with the volume of detail anatomy involves. I expect the transition to independent study to be demanding, but I am used to setting my own revision structure around work and sport.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

For the past eighteen months I have worked Saturdays and some holidays on the deli counter of a supermarket. It is ordinary work, but it has taught me things I will use. I handle raw and cooked products under strict hygiene and temperature rules, which means following procedure precisely even when there is a queue, and recording checks honestly rather than approximately. Serving customers with allergies has made me careful about giving accurate information and saying when I need to check rather than guessing. I also trained two new colleagues on the slicer and the labelling system, which showed me that explaining a process properly is harder than performing it.

Alongside college I carried out a small independent project on the mammalian skeleton. I visited the natural history collection in our city museum four times and made annotated drawings of the forelimbs of a range of mammals, then compared what I had recorded against textbook descriptions of the pentadactyl limb. Seeing the same set of bones reproportioned in a bat, a horse and a mole made the idea of homology concrete in a way the diagram in my textbook never did. I wrote it up as a short illustrated report and presented it to my Biology class, and the questions I was asked exposed how little I understood about how muscle attachment sites relate to bone shape. That has become the reading I am most interested in continuing.

I help run the college first aid club, having completed an emergency first aid course last year. We practise recovery position, bandaging and CPR on manikins and I organise the sign-up rota and equipment. It is basic, supervised practice, but it has made me more confident working close to other people and staying calm when a task has to be done in order.

I play netball for a college team as a centre. Court-side conversations about ankle taping and knee injuries have been a steady reminder of the practical side of anatomy, and the commitment of weekly training and fixtures has taught me to manage my time around fixed obligations, which I will need at university.
