Why do you want to study this course or subject?

The thing that first held my attention about flight was not speed but balance. In a cadet gliding session I was shown how a small change in attitude alters airspeed and rate of descent, and how the aircraft has to be flown rather than simply pointed. Back in the classroom, resolving forces on an inclined plane suddenly felt less abstract: lift, weight, thrust and drag are the same mathematics with much higher stakes. Aeronautical science appeals to me because it treats the aircraft, the crew, the air traffic system and the weather as one connected problem, instead of separating the engineering from the operational decisions made around it. I am particularly interested in performance and limitations. Watching a loaded turboprop leave a short, wet runway made me want to understand where the figures in the tables come from, and why margins are calculated as they are rather than estimated. Reading around the subject, I have found human factors just as compelling as aerodynamics; Sidney Dekker's writing on how organisations respond to error changed how I think about checklists and reporting, and about why a culture that encourages people to speak up matters as much as the equipment they use. My longer-term aim is a career in flight operations, whether as a pilot or in an operational or performance role, and I would like a degree that gives me the underlying science rather than only the procedures. I want to be the person who can explain why a limitation exists, not just repeat it.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

My A-levels in Maths, Physics and Geography have been chosen deliberately. Mechanics gives me the language for moments, couples and resolving forces, and I have found the work on projectiles and circular motion useful when thinking about turning flight and load factor. In Physics, the units on materials and on fluids helped me make sense of why wing structures are designed around stiffness and fatigue rather than raw strength alone, and I enjoyed the practical work on measuring drag and terminal velocity because it showed how messy real data is compared with a textbook equation. Geography has been an unexpectedly good fit: the synoptic meteorology we studied, particularly frontal systems, temperature inversions and local wind effects in valleys, is directly relevant to planning a flight and to interpreting a forecast. I also completed an Extended Project on why runway length requirements change with altitude and temperature, which pushed me into density altitude calculations and into reading manufacturer performance charts properly for the first time. I taught myself enough basic Python to plot how take-off distance grew across a range of temperatures, and learned to be careful about presenting a simple model as if it were an authoritative figure. Alongside lessons I work through cadet classification material on principles of flight, navigation and airmanship, and I sit voluntary written tests for it. Studying for those alongside coursework has forced me to be organised about revision and to accept that technical accuracy matters more than finishing quickly.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

Last summer I spent a week shadowing the operations team at a regional airport, arranged through my school. I was there as an observer, wearing a visitor pass and staying with my supervisor, but I was allowed to sit in on the morning briefing, watch stand allocation being reworked when an inbound aircraft went technical, and see how a bird control report was logged. What struck me was how much of the work was communication: the same delay was explained differently to a handling agent, a crew and a passenger-facing colleague. I also helped tidy and index a folder of training handouts, which was unglamorous but gave me a reason to read them. As a corporal in my air cadet squadron I run drill and basic radio exercises for younger cadets, mark their classification work and help staff on a weekend camp. Being responsible for a small team taught me to give instructions clearly and to check they have actually been understood rather than assuming. On my gliding course I flew several launches with an instructor and was surprised by how much concentration it took to fly a stable circuit. I volunteer twice a month at a small aviation heritage museum, guiding visitors around the aircraft and answering questions, which has made me better at explaining a technical idea to someone with no background in it. My Saturday job on a supermarket customer service desk involves refunds, complaints and lost property, and has taught me to stay calm and methodical with people who are already frustrated. Together, these have given me patience, an eye for procedure and a genuine appetite for the operational side of aviation.
