Why do you want to study this course or subject?

What draws me to forensic biology is the idea that biological material left behind almost by accident can be read carefully enough to say something reliable in court. Reading Val McDermid's Forensics: The Anatomy of Crime and Nigel McCrery's Silent Witnesses gave me a sense of how slowly that reliability was built, and how often early confidence turned out to be misplaced. Locard's exchange principle is simple to state, but the work of showing that a particular transfer happened, rather than assuming it, seems to be where the real science sits.

My A-level Biology work on DNA structure and the polymerase chain reaction made me want to understand profiling properly, so I followed it up with reading about short tandem repeats and why mixed samples are so much harder to interpret than the single clean profiles that appear in television dramas. I was surprised by how much of the discussion is statistical: not whether two profiles match, but how likely the observed result would be under competing explanations. That combination of laboratory technique and careful reasoning about probability appeals to me more than either would alone.

I also like that the subject is answerable to people outside the laboratory. A result is only useful if it can be explained honestly to a jury, including its limits. I want to train in a course that covers molecular biology, body fluid identification and trace evidence alongside the legal framework and the ethics of expert evidence, because I would rather be the kind of scientist who knows what their conclusion cannot support.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

Biology and Chemistry give me the core of what forensic biology depends on. In Chemistry I have become comfortable with practical technique and with the discipline of recording exactly what I did, which I now understand is closer to forensic laboratory practice than I first realised. Titrations and chromatography taught me that contamination and sloppy labelling ruin results long before any clever analysis begins. In Biology I enjoyed the genetics and microbiology units most, particularly work on enzymes and on the immune system, and my coursework investigation on the effect of temperature on catalase activity trained me in repeating measurements and being honest about anomalies rather than quietly dropping them.

Geography has been more useful than I expected. Fieldwork on a local river taught me sampling strategy: where to take a sample, how many to take, and why a convenient site is not always a representative one. Writing up that fieldwork, with mapped locations and a discussion of error, was the first time I had to defend a method rather than just describe it.

Alongside my A-levels I completed an extended piece of independent research through my college's enrichment programme, looking at how forensic entomology is used to estimate time since death. Reading about insect succession and the effect of temperature on development rates showed me how much of the interpretation rests on assumptions about the environment, and it improved my referencing and my ability to summarise conflicting sources fairly. I have also kept up mathematics informally, revising statistics topics so that probability in evidence interpretation does not come as a shock.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

For the past two years I have helped my uncle on Saturdays at his dry-cleaning shop, taking in garments, logging stains and fabric types, and explaining to customers why some marks will not come out. It sounds unglamorous, but it has made me genuinely observant about textiles. I can now recognise the difference between a shedding wool coat and a smooth synthetic lining, and I have seen how readily fibres, pet hair and grit transfer between items hanging together. When I later read about fibre evidence and secondary transfer, it connected immediately to things I had handled. The job has also taught me to keep accurate records under pressure and to be patient with people who are annoyed about something that is not my fault.

Outside college I volunteer with a local natural history group and have become the person who helps run the moth trap on summer evenings. I photograph and identify what we catch, record it on a spreadsheet and submit records to the county recorder. Identification often comes down to small, consistent features rather than first impressions, and I have learned to write "not confirmed" instead of guessing. That habit of recording uncertainty feels directly relevant to laboratory work.

I also support my grandmother, who has limited mobility, with her shopping, appointments and medication reminders two or three afternoons a week. Fitting that around study and work has forced me to plan properly and to be reliable when someone is depending on me. At college I tutor Year 12 students in Biology practicals once a week, which has improved how clearly I explain a method, a skill I expect to need in any degree that ends with presenting evidence.
