Why do you want to study this course or subject?

The click-and-collect desk where I work on Saturdays is the point where a lot of planning either holds together or falls apart. Customers see a bagged order; I see the substitutions, the chilled items that arrived in the wrong tote, the van slot that ran twenty minutes late because of roadworks on the ring road. Working there made me curious about the decisions taken long before a delivery reaches a store: how many depots a retailer needs, why some products are picked centrally and others in the shop, how a forecast made in August shapes what is on a shelf in November. Logistics appeals to me because those questions have measurable answers. A change to a route, a reorder point or a packing sequence can be tested, costed and improved, and the improvement is visible to real people waiting for real things. My Geography and Maths studies pull in the same direction. Mapping freight corridors and considering why distribution parks cluster near motorway junctions has shown me that the subject is geographical as well as numerical, and that constraints like planning permission, labour availability and driver hours matter as much as arithmetic. I want to study logistics formally so that I can move from noticing problems to modelling them: inventory theory, network design, procurement, and the trade-offs between cost, speed and emissions. In the longer term I would like to work in supply chain planning for a retailer or a food producer, ideally on the analytical side, and I am interested in how firms reduce the empty running of vehicles. A degree that combines quantitative methods with operational placements and case studies is what I am looking for, because I learn best when a technique is attached to a situation I can picture.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

I am studying Geography, Maths and Business Studies at sixth form college, which between them cover much of what drew me to logistics. In Geography I have worked on globalisation and trade, including the role of containerisation in reducing handling costs, and on urban transport, where I compared bus priority measures in two local corridors for my fieldwork. Maths has been the most demanding subject and the most useful: statistics has given me confidence with sampling, correlation and probability distributions, and mechanics has trained me to set out assumptions clearly before calculating anything. Business Studies covers operations management, break-even analysis and stock control, so terms like just-in-time and lead time were already familiar when I began reading more widely. For my extended project I investigated ordering in our college canteen after noticing how much bread and salad was discarded each week. I collected four weeks of usage data with the catering manager's permission, calculated average daily demand and variability for eight lines, and proposed simple reorder levels with a small safety stock rather than fixed weekly quantities. The manager adopted the approach for three of the items and told me waste on those lines fell noticeably over the following half term. Writing it up taught me how quickly data collection becomes the hard part of a project, and how important it is to explain a method to people who will actually use it. Outside the syllabus I have read Marc Levinson's The Box, which changed how I think about the port as a system rather than a place, and I follow trade press coverage of warehouse automation and driver shortages. I am now teaching myself spreadsheet modelling and the basics of Python, and I would like to build on that with formal training in optimisation.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

My Saturday and holiday job at a large supermarket has given me two years of customer-facing experience and a close view of daily operations. On the click-and-collect desk I check orders, handle substitutions and complaints, and coordinate with pickers when an item cannot be found, which means staying calm when someone is annoyed and the queue is growing. I have also covered shifts on goods-in, scanning deliveries and moving stock to the correct aisles, so I understand why accurate paperwork at the back door prevents problems at the shelf edge. I was asked to help train two new colleagues on the collection system last summer, which involved breaking a process I do automatically into steps somebody else could follow. At my local netball club I look after kit and fixtures logistics for the junior teams. That means keeping track of bibs and balls across four squads, booking the minibus, and planning who travels with whom to away matches, sometimes rearranging everything on a Friday evening when a court is unavailable. It is small-scale, but it has taught me about scheduling under constraints and about the value of a shared spreadsheet that everybody actually updates. I also helped organise a club tournament, working out timings for twelve matches on two courts and a rota for the refreshment stall. Alongside this I help at home with shopping and cooking for my younger brothers on weekday evenings, which keeps me organised with my own study time. From these commitments I bring practical time management, patience with people, and a habit of looking for the small inefficiency that nobody has bothered to fix. I am ready to test those instincts against proper theory at university, and to work in the kind of team-based, problem-focused way that logistics courses expect.
