Why do you want to study this course or subject?

When I sprained my ankle in a netball match two winters ago, the most useful person I met was not the one who told me to rest, but the club coach who showed me how to test whether I could balance on one leg with my eyes shut. That small test told me something measurable about my own body, and it made me curious about the reasoning behind rehabilitation rather than just the exercises. I wanted to know why a certain movement is reintroduced at a particular point, and how anyone decides that an athlete is ready to return. Sports rehabilitation appeals to me because it sits between biology and behaviour. From A level Biology I understand something of how connective tissue repairs and why loading matters; from Psychology I have come to appreciate that fear of reinjury can hold someone back long after the tissue has healed. I like that a rehabilitator has to work with both, and that progress depends on a person following advice when nobody is watching. My ankle recovered slowly and unevenly, which taught me that recovery is rarely a straight line and that reassurance has to be honest rather than comforting. I am applying for a degree rather than a short course because I want the anatomy, physiology and assessment skills to be properly grounded, and I want to be the kind of practitioner who can explain a decision clearly to a fifteen-year-old, a parent and a coach in three different ways.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

I am studying Biology, PE and Psychology at A level, which together cover most of what first-year sports rehabilitation seems to demand. Biology has been the most useful for structure and function: the practical work on enzyme activity and the topics on muscle contraction and the cardiovascular response to exercise gave me the vocabulary I now use when reading about injury. PE has provided anatomy, biomechanics and training principles, and I chose to write my coursework analysis on landing mechanics in netball, comparing filmed footage of two of my own jumps to identify how much my knee travelled inwards. That analysis was rough, but it taught me how much care video assessment needs and how easy it is to see what you expect to see. Psychology has been unexpectedly important, particularly research methods. Learning about reliability, control conditions and the limits of small samples made me more sceptical of the confident claims about stretching and recovery that circulate online. I completed an EPQ-style extended piece on whether proprioceptive training reduces recurrent ankle sprains, working mainly from open-access reviews and the NHS guidance I could reach without a subscription. I found that the studies rarely agreed on how long training should continue, which was frustrating but honest. I also read Bill Bryson's The Body for general interest, and I now follow the British Journal of Sports Medicine blog for accessible summaries of newer work.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

Formal placements are difficult to come by where I live, so I built my own small project. Over ten weeks last year I kept a log for myself and two teammates who agreed to take part, recording a single-leg balance time, an ankle dorsiflexion measurement taken with a tape measure against the wall, and a simple pain rating after training. I used a free spreadsheet app and a phone timer. The results were messy, partly because we measured at different times of day and partly because one participant missed sessions, and that was a genuine lesson in why standardised protocols matter. I still found it satisfying to see balance times improve and to have something concrete to discuss with our coach. Alongside this I help lead warm-ups for the under-13s at my netball club, which means adapting instructions when a child does not understand or is reluctant to try. Saturdays and some weekday evenings I work on the checkouts and shop floor at a supermarket, where I have learnt to stay patient with people who are tired or irritable, and where I have become the person colleagues ask for help with rota swaps. At home I take my younger brother to and from his football training, which is how I first noticed how casually junior injuries are managed. I also cycle for fitness and repair my own bike, which has made me unusually interested in how mechanical loads travel through a joint.
