Why do you want to study this course or subject?

A speaker came into my college last February who worked as a cardiac physiologist at a district general hospital. She brought a laptop with anonymised ECG traces on it and asked us to spot the difference between two rhythms. I got it wrong, but what stayed with me was that her job was to produce and interpret the measurement itself, not simply to pass it on. The diagnosis depended on whether she had placed the electrodes correctly and whether she recognised an artefact for what it was. I had assumed hospital work was divided into doctors and nurses; that afternoon I learned there is a whole profession built around physiological measurement, and it suited the way I like to think.

What draws me to clinical physiology is the combination of technical precision and direct contact with patients. In Biology I enjoy the cardiovascular and respiratory topics most, particularly the way pressure gradients and electrical conduction explain something as ordinary as a pulse. But I do not want to work only with numbers. Measuring lung function or performing an echocardiogram means talking someone through an unfamiliar procedure, judging whether they can manage a forced expiration, and noticing when a result does not match the person in front of you. My brother has asthma, and I have watched how much depends on whether he blows properly into a peak flow meter and whether anyone checks his technique rather than just the reading.

I am keen to study a course with substantial clinical placement, because I learn best when theory has something to attach itself to, and because I want to test my own suitability early rather than assume it. Cardiac, respiratory and sleep physiology all interest me, and I would like the chance to compare them before specialising.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?

My A levels give me a reasonable foundation for this course. Biology has been the most directly useful: the module on gas exchange and transport made sense of concepts I had only half understood from reading, such as why oxygen saturation can look acceptable while a patient is struggling. For my Biology practical endorsement I investigated the effect of exercise intensity on recovery heart rate among volunteers in my class, which taught me more about controlling variables than any textbook exercise. My data were messier than I expected, mainly because timing a manual pulse count is less reliable than I had assumed, and that pushed me to read about why clinical measurement uses standardised protocols.

Chemistry has trained me in careful quantitative work and in accepting that a result is only as good as the method behind it. Titrations taught me patience and consistency, which I imagine matters when repeating calibration checks on equipment. Psychology has been unexpectedly relevant to the patient-facing side: studying obedience, conformity and the factors affecting recall made me think about how people behave when they are anxious and in an unfamiliar setting, and how instructions need to be given clearly and without jargon.

Outside lessons I have been reading around the subject at a level I can manage. I worked through an introductory guide to ECG interpretation and can now follow the logic of the cardiac axis and identify basic rhythm abnormalities, though I am aware that recognising patterns in a book is not the same as recording a trace on a restless patient. I also read about spirometry standards and was struck by how much depends on coaching effort rather than on the machine. I attended two online talks aimed at students considering healthcare science careers, which helped me understand the structure of the profession and its registration route.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

On Saturday mornings I volunteer at a community centre near my home, helping with a seated exercise class for older residents. My job is practical: setting out chairs, handing out resistance bands, making tea afterwards and keeping the register. Over eighteen months I have got to know the regulars well. Several have heart conditions or COPD, and I have learned to notice when someone is more breathless than usual, to offer a rest without making a fuss, and to ask questions without being intrusive. One gentleman explained his pacemaker checks to me in detail, which was my first sense of how patients experience routine physiological monitoring as part of ordinary life.

At home I share responsibility for my younger brother, including collecting his prescriptions, keeping track of his inhaler technique and getting him to appointments when our parents are working. It has made me organised and reliable about things that cannot be forgotten, and it has shown me that consistent small measurements over time tell a clearer story than one dramatic reading.

I work weekend shifts in a supermarket bakery, which has taught me to keep accurate records, follow hygiene and safety procedures exactly, and work at pace alongside people I did not choose. Explaining to a customer why a product is unavailable requires a calm tone, and dealing with complaints has improved my composure considerably.

For relaxation I swim twice a week and have recently started open water sessions with a local group, which I enjoy for the discipline as much as the exercise. I also sing in a community choir, where learning to hold a part against others has sharpened my listening.

Together these commitments have made me punctual, steady under pressure and comfortable with people much older than me, which I think will serve me well in a clinical department.
