Personal statement example

My undergraduate degree in biochemistry gave me a solid grounding in protein structure and metabolic regulation, but it was my final-year project that pushed me towards biologics specifically. I expressed a small recombinant protein in E. coli, working through induction conditions and purification by nickel affinity chromatography. My yields were modest and inconsistent, and a good part of the year was spent trying to work out whether the problem lay with inclusion body formation, my lysis step, or simply the age of the column. The answer turned out to be less interesting than the process of narrowing it down. I learned to read a poor gel carefully rather than repeat the experiment hopefully, and I came away wanting to understand how anyone scales such a temperamental process into something that can be manufactured reproducibly, batch after batch, to a standard that regulators will accept.

Two weeks of supervised shadowing at a small contract manufacturing organisation sharpened that question considerably. I was an observer rather than an operator: I watched analysts run HPLC assays, sat in on a deviation review, and was shown how a batch record is compiled and checked. What struck me most was how much of the work was documentary. A result did not exist until it was recorded, signed and traceable, and a small ambiguity in a written method could hold up release for days. I had thought of quality control as a final gate; I now see it as something designed into the process from the start. I also noticed how differently biological products are treated compared with small molecules, with stability, aggregation and the limits of analytical comparability discussed constantly. That contrast is largely what I want to study formally.

Alongside my degree I have worked as a dispensing assistant in a community pharmacy for just over two years, mostly weekends. My responsibilities are practical rather than clinical: labelling, stock rotation, cold chain checks on fridge lines, and handing out prescriptions under the supervision of the pharmacist. It has taught me the unglamorous end of the supply chain. I have seen how a manufacturer's shortage notice translates into a patient standing at the counter, and how carefully biosimilar switches have to be explained by the pharmacist. Handling insulin pens and vaccine deliveries has made cold chain integrity feel concrete rather than theoretical. The job has also made me reliable about routine: counting, checking and recording accurately when tired is a skill I expect to be more useful in a laboratory than I once assumed.

My reading has followed these interests, though I am conscious it is still a beginner's view. I have used Walsh's Biopharmaceuticals: Biochemistry and Biotechnology to fill gaps in my understanding of upstream and downstream processing, and I have been following general coverage of mRNA platforms and antibody-drug conjugates in the scientific press. I would like to build proper competence in bioprocess design, formulation of biologics, and the analytical and regulatory frameworks that support them, ideally with a research project involving expression or purification so that I can improve on the technical habits I formed last year.

Outside study I help run a community allotment plot, which involves an unreasonable amount of scheduling and negotiation with other volunteers, and has taught me to plan a season rather than a week. Longer term I hope to work in bioprocess development or quality within the biopharmaceutical industry in the UK, and postgraduate study in pharmaceutical biotechnology is the most direct way for me to move from a general biochemistry background into that field with the specific laboratory and regulatory understanding it requires.
